Calvin 5, Adrian 1

By Mark DeHaan

Calvin women's soccer hosted Adrian on Tuesday looking to end the Bulldogs three-game win streak. With a pair of goals in the opening twelve minutes, the Knights did just that, setting the tone early and playing a complete game as they defeated the Bulldogs, 5-1.

Senior Kelly Koets (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) opened up the scoring in the eighth minute. Collecting the ball off a corner kick, Koets touched the ball down to her left foot, and from the top of the box, slotted the ball into the lower-right corner of the net for a 1-0 Calvin lead.

Just a few minutes later, fellow senior Danielle Carter (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) increased the Knights lead. Off of a rebound, Carter volleyed a shot off the crossbar and into the net to give the Knights a 2-0 advantage.

Calvin added a third goal in the first half as Koets found sophomore Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in the middle of the box who found the back of the net for the 3-0 edge.

Calvin took the 3-0 lead into the break as well as a 12-5 shots advantage

Out of halftime, Adrian responded quickly as 2012 MIAA MVP Erin Weide scored a goal just 20 seconds into the second period to cut the Calvin lead to 3-1 while seemingly grabbing momentum.

Moments later, Calvin received a response of its own as sophomore Taylor TenHarmsel (Holland/Holland Christian HS) blasted a bouncing ball past the Adrian goalkeeper to put the Knights lead back up to three at 4-1.

In the 75th minute, Calvin tallied its fifth and final goal of the afternoon. Making a run through the midfield, Paige Capel made her way to the top of the box with the ball at her left foot. Gaining a step on her defender, Capel ripped a shot which hit the top left corner of the net and gave the Knights a 5-1 lead which they would hold until the end of the game.

Key to Calvin's success was its ability to hold balls through the midfield as well as keep the strong attacking tandem of Weide and Sam Barker in check. The Knights held a 29-8 shots advantage by game's end. Senior Ashton Hearn (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron Northern HS) earned the victory in net, making two saves.

"This kind of team effort that you saw today was exactly how we began the year in our tournament in Milwaukee, and how Loras had such a hard time with us," said head coach Mark Recker. "As a team, I give credit to the captains because at some point you can settle for a certain level of performance, and with that comes a flatness. But, they've been able to rekindle that urge to compete and compete well."

With the win, the Knights move to 3-1-1 in the MIAA and 6-1-1 overall, while Adrian drops to 4-2-0 in conference and 6-3-1. Calvin's next contest comes up on Saturday when it will travel to Kalamazoo to face the Hornets, with kickoff set for noon.
