Volleyball Sweeps Hope in Matchup of No. 1 and No. 2 Ranked Teams;
Men's Soccer Captures 5-1 Win Over Hope at Zuidema Field

Calvin 3, Hope (25-17, 25-21, 28-26)

Tuesday night saw the top two teams in Division III volleyball square-off in Van Noord Arena. Calvin entered the night with the #1 ranking and a 12-0 record, while the Flying Dutch of Hope were just recently ranked #2 as it also held a 12-0 record.
The Knights, defending their top ranking, defeated Hope in straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-21, 28-26. Calvin has now won eight consecutive matches against Hope dating back to 2010.
Feeding off a raucous Calvin crowd, the Knights took set one 25-17, with sophomore Maggie Kamp tallying five kills and senior Kristin Zietse adding 10 digs. The Knights held momentum from the beginning, leading 10-6 early on and utilizing eight attack errors by the Flying Dutch to take the first set.
In set two, Hope jumped out to a 7-3 lead. After a Calvin timeout, the Knights rallied to tie the game at 12-12, aided by a pair of Hope errors. Four straight points by Calvin allowed them to take a 16-12 lead, which it would not relinquish. The Knights took set two 25-21.
Set three was tied early 8-8. Six straight points by Calvin gave the Knights a 14-6 lead and a lot of momentum. Calvin held the eight point margin until 19-11 when Hope called a timeout. The Flying Dutch responded with four straight points, bringing the score to 19-15 and forcing Calvin into a timeout. Hope continued its run after the Knights timeout, tying Calvin at 24-24.
Errors on both sides saw the momentum swing back-and-forth before Calvin won two straight points, a kill by freshman Laura Danhoff and a kill by Rietema to take the third and final set, 28-26.
Maggie Kamp paced the Knights with 16 kills while Danhoff added eight and junior Ellie Diepersloot seven. Rietema tallied 31 assists and 12 digs while Zietse finished with 21 digs.
Hope had 13 service errors on the game.
"I thought we came in and served really aggressively in a high pressure situation, and if you had to pinpoint one difference in the match, I think that is what it was," said head coach Amber Warners. "I'm extremely happy with how tough we held, even when it got tight in the third set - those are growing moments and we need those moments to get better."
Calvin is now 13-0 and 5-0 in the MIAA while Hope moves to 12-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
The Knights now look forward to Saturday when they will travel to Saint Mary's to play the Belles. Saturday's contest is scheduled to start at noon.

Calvin 5, Hope 1

The Calvin men's soccer team hosted the rival Flying Dutchmen of Hope College Tuesday afternoon in each team's MIAA opener. The Knights entered the contest 0-3-0 while Hope was ranked eighth in the nation with a record of 4-1-1. Calvin, playing at home for the first time this year, treated a crowd of more than 1000 to an impressive 5-1 victory and its first win of the season.
The opening minutes were played evenly, with neither team seeing any strong opportunities on net. Then, in the 15th minute, junior Gavin Midlam broke the 0-0 tie for the Flying Dutchmen. Senior Grant Neil sent a throw-in into the box from 30 yards out, and Midlam, with just a slight misdirection of his head, put the ball into the back of the net to give Hope the 1-0 lead.
Just over a minute later, the Knights received an emphatic response from junior Travis Vegter. With two Hope defenders on his hip, Vegter put a rocket-shot from 35 yards out into the top-left corner of the net to score his sixth goal of the season and tie the game at 1-1.
Utilizing its speed on the outside, Calvin continued to see chances on net. In the 30th minute, the Knights took the lead on a goal from senior Zach Willis. Willis took a pass from sophomore Taylor Pruis, and from the top of the box, placed the ball over the Hope keeper and into the back corner of the net as the Knights took a 2-1 lead, which they took into halftime.
Out of the break, the Knights added an insurance goal in the 54th minute. Taylor Pruis dispossessed defender Grant Neil in Hope's defensive third then found freshman Stephen Hooker at the top of the box. Hooker then calmly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner of the net to put Calvin's lead at 3-1.
Pruis continued his impressive game in the 82nd minute. Making a run into the center of the box, Pruis took a cross from Willis and volleyed it top-shelf to give the Knights a 4-1 edge.
In the 87th minute, the Knights completed the impressive victory with yet another goal, and again, it was Pruis who found the back of the net. Running up the middle, sophomore Jon Filippini found Pruis on a looping-pass over the defense. Placing the ball into the bottom right corner of the net, Pruis scored his second goal of the game and completed the 5-1 victory for the Knights.
Pruis finished the game with two goals and two assists while Willis had one goal and an assist. Calvin outshot the Flying Dutchmen 16-8. Junior goalkeeper Andrew Claucherty made three saves to earn the win.
"That is a very good Hope team. That result is not indicative of the team that we played," said head coach Ryan Souders. "We said we had to play 90 minutes, and tonight, shy of a mishap in terms of marking in the first half, we played 90 minutes. I'm real proud of our guys. We opened up (our season)
on the road, we played really tough opponents, and it is good to come home."
Calvin now looks forward to Friday when it will travel to Ohio to face the Beavers of Bluffton University. The Knights move to 1-3-0 on the year while Hope drops to 4-2-1.
