WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Albion 0
The nationally-ranked Calvin women's volleyball team moved to 5-0 overall and to 1-0 in league play with a 25-15, 25-9, 25-9 victory over visiting Albion College Tuesday night inside Calvin's Van Noord Arena. Tuesday's match marked the MIAA openers for both teams.
Albion hung around with Calvin in set one, trailing only 16-13 but the Knights proceeded to rip off five unanswered points and never looked back, seizing control of the match the rest of the way.
Calvin used 15 different players in the match and hit .430 as a team. Sophomore Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) tallied 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .474 while junior Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka Penn HS) had nine kills, three block assists and a blistering hitting percentage of .583.
Senior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was a catalyst for the Knights with eight kills, 33 assists and five digs. Senior libero Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) chipped in with 15 digs.
"I thought we had a solid effort," said Calvin women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "We got in pretty late last night, flying back from our weekend trip to (the state of) Washington so as a coach, there is always some concern about jet lag but I thought we handled that well. I also want to credit our fans tonight. We had excellent crowd support, particularly for our first match and I think that helped give our team an extra jolt of energy."
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Olivet at 1 p.m. at Van Noord Arena
