Track and Field Teams Receive Academic Honors From USTFCCCA
TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams have once again received the All-Academic Team Award from the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The Calvin women's team has now received the award 12 consecutive years while the Calvin men's team has received the honor five straight years.
In order to receive the award, a team needed to have posted a minimum 3.10 grade point average or better. The Calvin women's team posted a 3.40 grade point average and was one of 148 teams to receive the award while the Calvin men's team recorded a 3.18 grade point average and was one of 80 men's teams to be so honored.
In addition, seven members of the Calvin men's track and field team and five members of the Calvin women's track and field team have received individual USTFCCCA All-Academic status.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met either of the following athletic standards: a student-athlete must have competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship or finished the regular season ranked in the national top 35 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 25 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.
The seven members of the Calvin men's track and field team to receive USTFCCCA individual honors include seniors Job Christiansen (New Ipswisch, NH/Mascenic Regional HS), Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS), Matt VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) and Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS), junior Sam Kerk (Hartland, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS) and sophomores Steven Haagsma (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) and Erik Holstege (Kewsick, VA/Monticello HS.
The five members of the Calvin women's track and field team to receive the USTFCCCA individual award include seniors Kaylea Brase (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial HS), Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Carissa Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and juniors Alyssa Oram (Cheboygan, Mich./Home Schooled) and Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS).
Both Calvin track and field teams were led by fourth-year head coach Bret Otte. His men's and women's teams have received the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Award all four years during his tenure.
