Calvin Wins MIAA Commissioner's Cup;
Calvin Track & Field Athletes Receive All-MIAA Honors
COMMISSIONER'S CUP
For the first time since the 1999-2000 academic year, Calvin College has won the outright MIAA Commissioner's Cup. Calvin finished the year with 228 points, edging rival Hope for first place by two points. At the conclusion of the 2007-08 year, Calvin and Hope shared the Commissioner's Cup as the two schools tied for first place. Hope had since won the last four outright titles.
The MIAA Commissioner's Cup award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league's 20 sports for men and women.
The final Commissioner's Cup standings is determined on the basis of each college's standings in nine of 10 sports for men and nine of 10 sports for women.
The Commissioner's Cup (All-Sports Award) has beene presented since 1934-35. Hope has won the award 34 times, followed by Kalamazoo 15, Albion 14, Calvin 9 and Alma 5.
In addition, Calvin took first place in the MIAA Men's All-Sports standings with 106 points, finishing four points ahead of Hope. Hope took first place in the MIAA Women's All-Sports standings with 124 points, edging Calvin by two points.
The 2012-13 academic year has been an historic one for the Calvin athletics program as it captured an MIAA record 12 conference titles including 10 that were outright league crowns. Calvin competes in 19 of the 20 MIAA-sponsored sports. The Knights do not compete in football.
In the fall, Calvin claimed six outright MIAA titles as its men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, volleyball and men's golf team won league championships. During the winter season, Calvin took home three more titles with its men's basketball and women's swimming and diving teams winning outright championships while its women's basketball team claimed a co-championship.
This spring, Calvin added three more MIAA championships to the mix as its men's and women's track and field teams won outright league titles while its men's tennis team gained a three-way share of the MIAA title. The men's tennis title was the first league championship in Calvin history.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The All-MIAA men's track and field team has been announced and eight members of the MIAA champion Calvin men's track and field squad have received all-conference honors.
Named to the All-MIAA team from Calvin are seniors David Vande Bunte, Aaron Meckes, Greg Whittle, Matt VanderRoest, junior Sam Kerk, sophomores Erik Holstege and Calvin Kuyers and freshman Jon Cok.
Vande Bunte (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA track and field team. He claimed the league title in the 10,000 meters (31:17.38) last weekend at the MIAA Field Day.
VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) is making his second appearance on the All-MIAA team. VanderRoest won the 5,000 meters last weekend at the MIAA Field Day with a time of 14:52.63.
Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) is also making his second appearance on the All-MIAA team. Whittle was the league champion last weekend in the 1,500 meters (3:55.50) while placing fourth in the 800 meters (1:56.07).
Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) is making his second appearance on the All-MIAA team. Meckes repeated as league champion in the discus (158-1) while placing third in the shot put (51-8 1/2).
Kerk (Hartland, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS) is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA team. Kerk took second in the 1,500 meters (3:55.60) and was fifth in the 800 meters (1:56.14) at the MIAA Field Day.
Kuyers (Lansing/Lansing Christian HS) is also making his first appearance on the All-MIAA team. Kuyers was the league champion last weekend in the 400 meter hurdles (54.31) and placed second in the 110 high hurdles (15.71).
Holstege (Kewsick, Va./Monticello HS) was a multi-threat for the Knights at the MIAA Field Day, winning the 110 high hurdles (15.51), placing third in the long jump (21-4 3/4), sixth in the high jump (6-0) and eighth in the 200 meters (24.26). Holstege is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA team. His father Chris Holstege was a three-time All-MIAA track and field selection for Calvin from 1985-to-1988 while his uncle Todd Holstege was a two-time All-MIAA selection in football at Hope College from 1981-to-1982.
Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) earned a spot on the All-MIAA team by winning the high jump last weekend with a jump of 6-4 while placing eighth in the long jump (20-7 3/4) and triple jump (41-4 1/4).
The Calvin men's track and field team captured the outright MIAA title by taking first place at both the MIAA Jamboree and MIAA Field Day this spring. The title was Calvin's third under fourth-year head coach Bret Otte and the 37th in program history.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The All-MIAA women's track and field team has been announced and eight members of the MIAA champion Calvin women's track and field squad have received all-conference honors.
Named to the All-MIAA team from Calvin are seniors Carissa Verkaik, Kaylea Brase, Alyssa Penning, juniors Lauren Madden, Julie Busscher, Nicole Michmerhuizen, Hilary Banning and Olivia Butler.
Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) is making her third straight appearance on the All-MIAA track and field team. Combined, she has now recorded seven All-MIAA berths in her collegiate career as she was a four-time All-MIAA selection in women's basketball. At the MIAA Field Day last weekend, Verkaik captured the women's high jump title for a third straight year, winning with a jump of 5-3 3/4.
Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) is making her second appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Field Day, she repeated as league champion in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, winning with a time of 11:02.18.
Brase (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial HS) is making her first appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Field Day, she was second in the 1,500 meters (4:41.62) and third in the 800 meters (2:18.16).
Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) is making her second appearance on the All-MIAA team. She was the league champion in the 5,000 meters at the MIAA Field Day last Friday, winning with an MIAA record time of 17:08.23.
Busscher (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) is also making her third straight appearance on the All-MIAA team. Busscher was the league champion in the 100 meters (12.63) and 200 meters (25.67) and also ran a leg on Calvin's winning 4x400 meter relay team last weekend at the MIAA Field Day.
Madden (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) was the league champion in the javelin (119-10), becoming the 14th different individual in Calvin women's track and field history to win the event at the MIAA Field Day.
Banning (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) is making her first appearance on the All-MIAA team. Banning was a multi-event scorer for the Knights at the MIAA Field Day as she placed second in the triple jump (36-0), sixth in the long jump (16-1 3/4) and fourth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:07.61).
Butler (Grant/Grant HS) is also making her first appearance on the All-MIAA team. Butler took second in the 800 meters at the MIAA Field Day, clocking in with a time of 2:17.04. She also ran the anchor leg on Calvin's first place 4x400 meter relay team.
The Calvin women's track and field team captured the outright MIAA title by taking first place at both the MIAA Jamboree and MIAA Field Day this spring. The title was Calvin's fourth under fourth-year head coach Bret Otte and the 24th consecutive in program history. The championship streak of 24 titles is the longest active championship streak in MIAA women's athletics history.
