Fighting through injuries and illness, the Calvin baseball team found a way to
gain a doubleheader split against Olivet on Saturday and in the process a split
of the four-game weekend series with the Comets.
Calvin opened Saturday's twinbill with a 4-2 loss but came back to defeat the
Comets 4-3 in game two. The Knights are now 3-3 in MIAA play heading into a
Monday makeup doubleheader against Trine scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Calvin
Field.
In Saturday's opener against Olivet, Calvin trailed 3-0 as the Comets scored
two in the second and one in the top of the sixth. Calvin (4-11 overall)
rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth as freshman Tyler Lambers
(Holland/Holland Christian HS) drove in one run with an infield single and
freshman Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored on an
Olivet error. Calvin then had runners on first and third with one out when
freshman Michael Kamp (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) ripped a line drive
that was speared by the Olivet pitcher and turned into an inning-ending
double-play. The Comets then scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh
and the Knights stranded two runners in the bottom half to close out the game.
Sophomore Jeremy Kamp (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) took the loss for
Calvin to fall to 0-2 on the year. Freshman Jalen Bouma (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor
Huron HS) went 2-for-4 at the plate in the loss.
In game two, sophomore Nate Schepers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) made his
first pitching appearance in nearly a month as he relieved freshman starter
Travis Kraai (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the third. Schepers
went the next 3.2 innings of relief to gain the win while junior Jeff Victor
(Holland/Holland Christian HS) tossed a shutout inning in the seventh to pick
up the save.
Calvin scored three runs in the bottom of the first as Bouma, senior Ben Cok
(Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Garrett Harder
(Fenwick/West Michigan Lutheran HS) all delivered RBI singles. Olivet answered
with three runs in the top of the second but Calvin pushed ahead the go-ahead
run in the bottom half as sophomore Ben Wohl (Canton/Plymouth HS) plated
freshman Jordan VanderWal (Wyoming/South Christian HS) with a run-scoring
groundout.
In the seventh, Olivet loaded the bases with one out but Victor was able to
get out the jam with a strikeout and a pop-foul to the catcher.
Sophomore Grant VanPutten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) went 2-for-4 for the
Knights with a double and a triple while Jordan VanderWall went 3-for-3.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Beloit 16, Calvin 8
By Mark DeHaan
Calvin men's lacrosse hosted the Buccaneers of Beloit College Saturday
afternoon at Zuidema Field. A strong first three quarters saw the Knights in a
position to make a run at the game late, but Beloit played strong defense in
the fourth and increased their lead en route to a 16-8 victory over Calvin.
The Buccaneers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a pair of goals from Jacob
Pritscher.
Calvin freshman D.J. VanderBaan answered with a goal with 5:18 remaining in
the first quarter.
By the end of the period, Beloit held a 4-1 lead.
In the second quarter, the Buccaneers extended their lead as Aidan Whinnery
scored a goal and assisted on another to bring the score to 6-1 by halftime.
After the break, the Knights came alive and began to apply pressure to
Beloit's net. Sophomore Tim Marco began the scoring. On a cut through the
middle, Marco was found on a pass from VanderBaan and quickly put the ball
into the back of the net to bring the score to 6-2.
Senior Greg Boer then scored on an assist from junior Casey Harless and Tim
Marco added his second goal of the period to cut the Buccaneers lead to 6-4.
The teams then traded a goal to bring the score to 7-5.
Beloit added two more goals and VanderBaan responded with one for Calvin to
bring the score to 9-6 in favor of the Buccaneers heading into the fourth
quarter.
With a short bench, the Knights began to feel the effect of the long game at
the beginning of the fourth when Beloit began to pull away. The Buccaneers
scored the first goal of the quarter less than 30 seconds in. Marco responded
to cut Beloit's lead to 10-7.
The Buccaneers then scored six straight, two goals from Ryan Hazuka and two
assists from Pritscher to put the game out of reach. Calvin scored the last
goal of the contest as Marco connected with Harless who buried it in the back
of the net with 1:46 remaining. The game ended with the final score in
Beloit's favor, 16-8. The Buccaneers outscored the Knights 7-2 in the final
period.
Marco led Calvin on offense with three goals and an assist while VanderBaan
and Harless added two and Boer had one. Whinnery led Beloit with four goals and
three assists while Hazuka added three goals and one assist and four other
Buccaneers chipped in two goals. Beloit built a 34-25 shots advantage
throughout the game while also winning 18-of-26 faceoffs.
“We're starting to really come together as a unit. Some of the issues of
having a new team and having a handful of guys that have never played the sport
before is getting them to understand the nature of the game” said head coach
Joel Kamstra. “We had real good glimpses of solid offense and solid defense,
and our special teams are coming along which were really helpful for us today.
We didn't win a whole lot of draws but we're working on all that stuff each
week and I think we're laying a really good base as we head into conference
play next week.”
Calvin is now 1-7 on the year, while Beloit moves to 3-6.
The Knights now look forward to next week Saturday when they will host the
Bulldogs of Adrian for their first varsity lacrosse MIAA contest. The game is
slated to start at 1 p.m.
