CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 5, 2012 (PART TWO)
 
Calvin Women's Soccer Players Receive All-MIAA Honors;
Kamp and Gordon Named MIAA Volleyball Players of the Week;
Reed Bowden Named MIAA Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week;
Johnson Cochran Named MIAA Swimmer of the Week
 
WOMEN'S SOCCER
 
ROYAL OAK - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has released its
All-MIAA First and Second Teams in women’s soccer. Four Knights earned
All-MIAA honors. Senior Francesca Smith, junior Danielle Carter and freshmen
Taylor Ten Harmsel were named to the All-MIAA First Team. Freshmen Sydney
Kinney was named to the All-MIAA Second Team.
 
Smith is a native of Bloomington, Indiana, and a graduate of Bloomington South
High School. This season, Smith has started all 20 games for the Knights,
scoring five goals and dishing out five assists.

She is also a team captain. She is being honored for the third straight
year.

Carter is a native of DeWitt and a graduate of DeWitt High School. She has
started all 20 games, scoring eight goals and dishing out four assists. She,
along with Smith, is a team captain this season. She scored the game-winning
goal against rival Hope in the MIAA Tournament, which gave Calvin a birth in
the NCAA III Tournament. Carter is being honored for the first time in her
career.

Ten Harmsel is a native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High
School. She leads the Knights in points this season with 24, 10 goals and four
assists. She is being honored for the first time in her career.

Kinney is a native of Ada and a graduate of Holland Christian High School.
She has started all 20 games this season at defense for the Knights. On the
season, Kinney has one goal and three assists. She is being honored for the
first time in her career.
 
VOLLEYBALL
 
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named
Calvin outside hitter Maggie Kamp its Position Player of the Week and Calvin
libero Kelly Gordon its Specialty Player of the Week in volleyball for matches
played through November 3.

Kamp, a freshman from Orland Park, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), slammed 34
kills and had an attack percentage of .368 in leading Calvin to the MIAA
tournament championship. In the championship match against Hope, she led the
Knights with 19 kills as the Knights rallied to win the match in five sets.
Kamp is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Gordon, a senior from Caledonia (Grand Rapids South Christian HS), played a
pivotal role defensively in Calvin’s run to the MIAA tournament championship,
leading the Knights with 30 digs in their two matches. She had 18 digs to lead
Calvin in the championship match against Hope. It’s the second Player of the
Week honor in Gordon’s career, with the other coming after last year’s MIAA
tournament.
 
MEN'S SOCCER
 
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named
Calvin defender Reed Bowden its MIAA Defensive Player of the Week in men’s
soccer for games played through November 3.
 
Bowden, a sophomore from Uxbridge, Mass. (Whitinsville Christian HS), anchored
a strong defensive effort from his centerback position as he led the Knights to
back-to-back shutouts in the MIAA tournament. Calvin limited its opposition to
12 shots for the tournament in wins over Kalamazoo, 1-0, and Olivet, 3-0.
 
Bowden is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his
career.
 
MEN'S SWIMMING
 
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named
Calvin’s Johnson Cochran as its Men's Athlete of the Week in swimming and
diving for meets through November 3.
Cochran, a freshman from Mount Vernon, Ohio (Mount Vernon HS), took first
place in both breaststroke events as the Knights defeated Wheaton, Ill.,
163-117, in a nonleague dual meet. He won the 100-yard breaststroke in :58.23
and 200 breaststroke in 2:11.1, with both times ranking at the top of the MIAA
early in the season.
 
Cochran is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in his
career.
