CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR NOV. 1, 2012
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 1, Kalamazoo 0
GRAND RAPIDS – Calvin needed double overtime to defeat the Hornets of
Kalamazoo College 1-0 in the MIAA Tournament semifinals Thursday afternoon.
In the 109th minute, freshmen Taylor Pruis broke free on the far sideline and
sent a cross into the box. Sophomore Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity
Christian) rose up inside the six-year box and headed the ball past Kalamazoo
goalkeeper Dane McDonnell giving the Knights the victory.
The Hornets played very defensive soccer during the contest. With 10 and
sometimes 11 players behind the ball at all times, neither team had many
quality scoring chances. The best chance of the first half came from junior
Zach Willis. Willis broke through the Hornet defense. His shot sailed just
wide of the net on the short side.
Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 13-3 in the first half. Each team took two corner
kicks.
The Hornet’s best chance of the game came in the second half. In the 60th
minute, Kalamazoo earned a corner kick. Nicholas Shabino got a head on the
ball, which was blocked by Calvin sophomore defender Sean Broekhuizen (Grand
Rapids/South Christian). Ten minutes later, Jared Georgakopolous took a shot
from distance that sailed just wide.
That was all Kalamazoo could muster on offense. In the 78th minute, senior
Chris Nance (Washington/De La Salle) ran down a ball from fellow senior Nick
Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity Christian). Nance pulled out McDonnell, and flicked
the ball just over the crossbar.
Before the goal by Vegter, Calvin had six shots in the overtimes, while
holding Kalamazoo to zero.
The Knights outshot the Hornets 28-5 in the contest including 6-2 in shots on
goal.
“We’ll take the win,” Calvin head coach Ryan Souders said after the match.
“Kalamazoo did not play the most flashy style today, putting many defenders
behind the ball, but give the them credit. We had chances, but could not
capitalize until the final minutes.”
Calvin will move on to the MIAA Tournament Championship played Saturday at
2:30 p.m. Olivet defeated Hope 2-1 in the other semifinal, so Calvin will face
the Comets at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.”
