By Mark DeHaan
Wrapping up the first half of their conference schedule, the Knights hosted the
Hornets of Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field. Calvin came out
victorious 3-2 to finish just one point behind Alma for first place in the MIAA
through half of its schedule.
Kalamazoo drew first blood in the game as senior and prolific
scorer Jackie Short broke past the Calvin defense and into a one-on-one with
Knights junior keeper Ashton Hearn. Short beat Hearn to the far side to put the
Hornets up 1-0 in the 12th minute.
In the 15th minute, the Knights equalized as junior Kelly Koets
found senior Francesca Smith on the far post who put the ball into the net.
Calvin took the lead just over ten minutes later as freshman Paige Capel found
the back of the net on a pass from junior Danielle Carter for the 2-1
advantage. Calvin took this lead in halftime as well as a 14-3 shots advantage.
Coming out the break, Calvin continued to possess the ball while pressuring the
Hornets keeper. In the 75th minute, another Koets-Smith connection
resulted in a goal as Koets tapped home a goal off a Smith header into the box.
With a comfortable 3-1 advantage, head coach Mark Recker began to utilize his
bench. But, with under ten minutes remaining, the Hornets drew to within one on
a long shot from Short that beat sophomore keeper Lauren Merz top shelf to cut
the Knights lead to 3-2. The goal was Short's ninth of the year.
With under a minute remaining, Kalamazoo earned a free kick from about forty
yards out. The kick sailed high though, and the Knights ran out the remainder
of the clock to earn a close 3-2 win.
Calvin built a 22-10 shots advantage throughout the game and a 5-1 corner kick
advantage. Hearn earned the win in net, playing 75 minutes and making one save.
“I'm really proud of the team. They came out and really played some sharp
soccer,” said Recker. “This team is a team that is an unselfish team. When we
move the ball, we make teams chase us, and we do less running when we pass it
well. That is the game that we really want to keep elevating. And the fact that
we have such young members playing is a huge advantage for us.”
The Knights next game is Tuesday at Trine. The game is scheduled to start at
4:00 p.m.
