Looking to extend their two game win streak, the Knights of Calvin traveled to
Van Andel Stadium in Holland to face the Flying Dutchmen of Hope. And, just as
they had last year, the Knights returned to Grand Rapids with an exciting 1-0
victory.

Calvin's lone goal came early as sophomore Travis Vegter struck for the
Knights, breaking through the Hope back line to face Hope freshman keeper Ethan
Beswick one-on-one. Dribbling toward the corner of the six yard box, Vegter
snuck a shot under Beswick's arm and inside the near post to put Calvin up
1-0.

After the first ten minutes, in which the Knights held the majority of the
possession, Hope began to settle down and pressure Calvin senior keeper Jared
Rushlau. Hope's Josh Whitaker and Tarwo Konbloa each had great shots on net
late in the first half, both curving just wide of the frame as Calvin took the
1-0 advantage into halftime.

In the second half, the pace quickened as each team looked for the long ball
and run onto net. The result was more shots for each team. Despite the
increased pressure in the respective defensive thirds, Hope was unable to put
any true chances on net.

With twenty minutes remaining, it appeared that the Flying Dutchmen had tied
up the ball game when a long throw from about 40 yards out found the back of
the net on an apparent deflection. The goal was waved off, however, as the head
referee called a foul on a Hope forward for pushing Calvin keeper Jared Rushlau
out of the way.

The Knights then held possession for the majority of the time remaining,
preventing any strong scoring opportunities for Hope and earning a tough 1-0
win.

“First five minutes we came out real strong, we moved the ball real well and
our passes were going right where we wanted to,” said Vegter. “I had a good
first touch right to goal and it was just me and the goalie at that point. It's
not about power. I was so close, (the keeper) wasn't going to get down fast
enough, all you have to do is place it at that point.”

Calvin now moves to 3-1 in conference and 5-3 overall while dropping the
Flying Dutchmen to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA.

“Any time you can go on the road and win in the MIAA is huge,” said first-year
head coach Ryan Souders. “To do it at Van Andel, against a very heated rival,
it's that much bigger. I'm very proud of our guys, I think we still have some
stuff to work on, but I thought we played well, we gritted it out, and we leave
with three points.”
The Knights now look forward to Saturday when they will travel to Kalamazoo
College to face the Hornets. The Hornets, also 3-1 in conference, are tied with
Calvin for second in the MIAA while Olivet sits in first at 4-0. The game is
scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
