Calvin Sending 10 to NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams will send a combined 10
athletes to the upcoming NCAA III Track and Field Championships including five
from its women’s team and five from its men’s team.The following is a look at
the 10 individuals that will represent the Calvin track and field program at
the NCAA III Track and Field Championships this Thursday, Friday and Saturday
(May 24-26) at Claremont-Scripps College in Claremont, California.
MEN’S TEAM
NICK KRAMER (Dyer, IN/Illliana Christian HS)- A senior, Kramer will be making
his third trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In 2010,
he was an NCAA III All-American in both the 3,000 meter steeplechase and 5,000
meters, placing fourth in the steeplechase and eighth in the 5,0000. In 2011,
he placed third in the steeplechase and fourth in the 5,000 meters. Kramer will
again compete in the 3,000 meter steeplechase where he is seeded fourth
(9:00.05) and in the 5,000 meters where he is seeded fourth (14:12.39).Earlier
this month, Kramer captured the MIAA title in the 5,000 meters and was named to
the All-MIAA team for the third straight year. This past March, he claimed an
All-America berth at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships in the
5,000 meters, placing eighth.
MATT VANDER ROEST (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) - a junior, Vander Roest will
be making his first appearance at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field
Championships. He will compete in the 5,000 meters where he is seeded 19th
(14:29.92). Vander Roest was the MIAA champion in the steeplechase this spring
and was named to the All-MIAA track and field team.
DAN KERR (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) - A senior Kerr will be making his second
appearance at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Kerr will
again compete in the 10,000 meters where he is seeded fifth (29:42.36). At the
MIAA Championships earlier this month, Kerr captured a league title in the
10,000 meters.
GREG WHITTLE (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) - A junior, Whittle will be making
his second appearance at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He
will compete in the 1500 meters where he is seeded eighth (3:50.16). At the
2011 NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships, Whittle earned national
runner-up honors in the mile run for the first All-America berth of his
collegiate career. He then took fourth in the 1500 meters at the 2011 NCAA III
Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
AARON MECKES (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) - A junior Meckes will be
making his first trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He
will compete in the shot put where he is seeded 14th (54-6). Meckes was an NCAA
III Indoor Track and Field All-American this past March, placing eighth in the
event.
WOMEN’S TEAM
CARISSA VERKAIK (Holland, MI/Holland Christian HS) - A junior, Verkaik will be
making her second trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
She will compete in the high jump where she is seeded 14th (5-6). At the MIAA
Championships earlier this month, Verkaik captured the league title in the high
jump and earned a spot on the All-MIAA team for the second straight year. A
two-sport athlete at Calvin, Verkaik is also a three-time MIAA MVP and first
team All-MIAA selection in women’s basketball.
JODI HOEKSTRA - (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) - A senior, Hoekstra
will be making her second appearance at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field
Championships. She will compete in the 5,000 meters where she is seeded third
(16:40.25). At the MIAA Championships earlier this month, Hoekstra was the
league champion in both the 5K and 1500 meters and landed a spot on the
All-MIAA team for a third straight year.
ALYSSA PENNING - (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) - A junior, Penning
will be making her second appearance at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field
Championships. She will compete in the steeplechase where she is seeded 11th
(10:48.86). Penning was the MIAA champion in the steeplechase this spring and
landed a spot on the All-MIAA team.
KAITLIN DIEMER - (Caledonia/South Christian HS) - Diemer will be making her
second trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships and her first
as an individual. She will compete in the 1500 meters where she is seeded 22nd
(4:37.90). Diemer was the MIAA champion this spring in the 800 meters and
landed a spot on the All-MIAA team.
NICOLE MICHMERHUIZEN (Holland/Holland Christian HS) - A sophomore,
Michmerhuizen is making her first trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field
Championships. She will compete in the 10,000 meters where she is seeded 22nd
(36:21.37) and in the 5,000 meters where she is seeded 16th (17:07.96).
Michmerhuizen was the MIAA champion this spring in the 10,000 meters and earned
a spot on the All-MIAA team.
