Calvin Names Recipients of Bere'/Tiemersma Awards
GRAND RAPIDS - Calvin College has announced the 2011 recipients of its highest
honors for men’s and women’s athletics: the Bere’ Memorial Award and the Kay
Tiemersma Athletic Award. Nick Kramer of Dyer, Indiana, is this year’s Bere’
Memorial Award winner while Rebecca Kamp of Palos Heights, Illinois, is this
year’s recipient of the Tiemersma Award.
The Bere’ Memorial Award has been presented annually by Calvin since 1951. The
Bere’ honors the top senior male student-athlete, based on athletic ability,
scholastic rank, character and leadership, and is selected by the school’s
varsity coaches, its athletics administrators and its faculty athletic
representatives. It is given in memory of Joe Bere’, a Calvin student who was
killed in a 1949 auto accident on his way to watch a Calvin basketball game.
This is the 38th year that Calvin has given the Tiemersma award, presented
annually to the top senior female student-athlete. The award honors Kay
Tiemersma, the first woman physical education teacher in the member schools of
the Christian Schools International organization, and a pioneer in women’s
sports. Its presentation is based on athletic ability, scholastic standing, and
character and leadership. The winner is also selected by the school”s varsity
coaches, its athletics administrators and its faculty athletic
representatives.
NICK KRAMER
A graduate of Illiana Christian High School, Kramer has been a four-year
member of the Calvin men’s track and field team and a three-year member of the
Calvin men’s cross country program. He sat out the cross country season this
past fall because of an injury but will return for a final season of
eligibility next fall.
As a cross country runner, Kramer has been a three-time first team All-MIAA
selection, a two-time Great Lakes All-Region choice and a 2010 NCAA III
All-American as he finished 16th at the national meet. He was the 2010 MIAA
Most Valuable Runner in cross country and was named the Great Lakes Regional
Runner of the Year in both 2009 and 2010 after winning Great Lakes Regional
individual titles.
In track and field, he has been a three-time All-MIAA selection. At the
national level, he has earned All-America honors six times, twice indoors and
four times outdoors. On the indoor circuit, Kramer has been an All-American
twice in the 5,000 meters. He has also earned All-America honors twice in the
5,000 meters outdoors as well as twice in the steeplechase. He is currently
ranked among the national leaders this spring in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters as
well as in the steeplechase. He is expected to compete in both the steeplechase
and 5,000 meters at the upcoming NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field
Championships. Earlier this spring, Kramer established a new Calvin record in
the 5,000 meters, clocking in with a time of 14:12.39 at the Hillsdale Gina
Relays, breaking the previous school record by 10 seconds.
Kramer has been a part of six MIAA championship teams at Calvin – three in
track and field and three in cross country.
In the classroom, Kramer is a business major with an emphasis in marketing.

REBECCA KAMP
A graduate of Chicago Christian High School, Rebecca Kamp has been a four-year
member of the Calvin women’s volleyball team. She is without question, the most
decorated player in Calvin volleyball history. This past fall, she was named a
first team Division III All-American for the fourth straight year. She is one
of only two individuals in NCAA III history to be named a four-time first team
All-American.
This past December, she received two prestigious honors as she was named the
Division III National Player of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches
Association and was later named the Capital One Academic All-American of the
Year in Division III.
A middle-hitter on the volleyball court, Kamp was a four-time first team
All-MIAA selection and a three-time MIAA Most Valuable Player. She was also
named to the Great Lakes All-Region team four times and was named the 2008
Division III National Freshman of the Year by the AVCA.
She was a part of two MIAA regular season championship teams and two teams
that claimed MIAA Tournament titles. In 2010, she helped lead Calvin to the
school’s first national championship in volleyball and was named the Most
Outstanding Player of the 2010 NCAA III Finals in St. Louis, Missouri.
Kamp will graduate from Calvin tomorrow with a degree in special education.
She has been an eight-time member of the Calvin Dean’s List, a three-time
member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and a two-time first team Academic
All-American.
Next fall, she will begin teaching at Westminster Christian High School in St.
Louis, Missouri.
