Softball Wins Dramatic 1-0 Win in Walk-Off Fashion at Adrian;
Baseball Takes Out Aquinas 8-3 - Runs Win Streak to Three Games;
Joe Lambers Named MIAA Pitcher of the Week in Baseball
SOFTBALL
Calvin 1, Adrian 0
ADRIAN - For the second time in three games, Calvin recorded a walk-off win,
defeating the host Bulldogs of Adrian 1-0 Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Christie
VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) smacked a two-out single into right field
to score the game-winning run from third give the Knights the win.
This past Friday, a freshman also delivered a walk-off hit as freshman
Catherine Hillbrands ripped a two-out single to drive in the game-winning run
in the bottom of the 11th inning of a 2-1 win at Alma.
With Tuesday’s victory, Calvin concludes its 2012 season with an overall record
of 15-21 – a nine-game improvement over its 2011 campaign. The Knights also
finish 6-10 in the MIAA, good for a tie for sixth place in the league standings
with Olivet.
Calvin concludes the season with four wins in its last six games including two
wins over teams (Adrian and Alma) headed to the four-team MIAA Tournament later
this week.
In its win over Adrian Tuesday, Calvin traded goose-eggs with the Bulldogs on
the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh. The winning rally began with a
lead-off walk by junior Hannah DeWeerd (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS)
with freshman Meghan Smith (Morenci/Morenci HS) coming on to pinch-run. Smith
moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Nicole Weener (Zeeland/Holland
Christian HS) and two batters later, moved to third on a single to left by
freshman Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS). VanderMeer then
stepped up and delivered the game-winning hit to right, sending the Knights
home to Grand Rapids a winner.
Sophomore Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) tossed the shutout for
the Knights, striking out two in seven innings of work. Avila closed out the
season 8-10 on the mound.
Senior Marie Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) closed out her Calvin
career in style, going 3-for-3 at the plate to finish with a season batting
average of .394 and a season hit total of 41. Her average is the highest by a
Calvin player since Jeanne Cole batted .425 in 2005. Her hit total is also the
highest since Cole collected 51 hits in 2005.
Prins concludes her Calvin career with a four-year batting average of .336
(140-for-417).
Calvin’s season win total of 15 is its highest since the 2005 season when the
Knights went 25-13.

The Knights came through with an 8-3 victory over crosstown rival Aquinas on
Tuesday.
Freshman
Jeremy Kamp (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) started for the Knights, and
held the Saints scoreless in his four
innings of work. Calvin’s bats were silent in the first two innings, but the
Knights
drew first blood in the bottom of the third. Freshman Grant Van Putten (Holland
Christian HS) knocked
a single passed the drawn-in infield to score Dan Miedema (South Christian HS),
putting the Knights
on top 1-0.
Calvin
added three runs in the fourth. Mike Fuller (Sylvania, OH/Southview HS) drew a
walk to score a run and Drew
Vos (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Miedema added RBI groundouts to put Calvin
on top by four.
But
the Saints marched back in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Brendan
Penny drilled a two-run single to left. Scott Witkop batted in a run in the
sixth the cut the Knights advantage to one.
But
Calvin would extend the margin an inning later. Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian
HS) laced a two-run single
down the third base line and Ben Wohl (Canton/Plymouth HS) scored Cok on a
single up the mlead would hold as, in the eighth and ninth innings, Austin Juza (St.
Joseph/Lake Michigan Catholic HS) and Brent
Zinn (Canton/Plymouth Christian HS), took to the mound to protect it. Zinn
pitched the Saints into three
groundouts to conclude the game at 8-3.
Tom
Bouwkamp (Pella, IA/Pella Christian HS), who came on in the sixth, got the win
for the Knights, who improved
their record to 14-22 overall.
Calvin will now prepare to host rival Hope on Friday in a doubleheader at 2
p.m.
MORE BASEBALL
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named
Calvin lefthander Joe Lambers its Pitcher of the Week for games played through
April 30.
Lambers, a senior from Grosse Pointe (Grosse Pointe South HS), teamed up with
Nate Schepers to throw Calvin’s first no-hitter ever in an MIAA game as the
Knights defeated Albion, 6-2.
Lambers struck out eight and walked two in five innings of work as Calvin
recorded the first no-hitter in an MIAA game since 2009. He also struck out
seven and allowed two earned runs in 5-1/3 innings in a 4-1 loss to Alma.
Lambers is being honored as Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his
career.
