OLIVET - Calvin stretched its win streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep
at Olivet Tuesday afternoon, winning by scores of 3-0 and 8-0. Calvin's current
six-game win streak is its longest since 2004 when the Knights ripped off an
eight-game win streak.
Calvin is now 11-15 overall and 4-4 in the MIAA heading into a Thursday home
doubleheader against rival Hope at 3:30 p.m.
Calvin received stellar pitching performances in both of its victories over
Olivet Tuesday. In game one, sophomore Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley
Christian HS) tossed her first collegiate shutout, scattering five hits,
striking out two and walking none in seven innings of work.
Calvin scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Senior Marie
Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) put Calvin on the board with a
run-scoring double in the fifth that plated freshman Christie VanderMeer
(Grandville/Grandville HS) who had singled earlier in the inning.
In the sixth, freshman Kelsey Pollock (Greenville/Belding HS) singled home
freshman Catherine Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) from
second base to make it 2-0. In the seventh, Prins ripped her third home run of
the spring, spraying a line drive off the scoreboard hanging above the fence.
VanderMeer and Prins were both 2-for-3 in the win.
In game two, freshman Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS)
tossed her second consecutive shutout as she limited the Comets to three hits
in a game that lasted just five innings due to the mercy-rule. Brownlee struck
out three and walked just one in upping her season record to 6-7 on the year.
Calvin collected 12 hits in the win led by junior Hannah DeWeerd (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two
RBI's. Freshman Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 2-for-3
with a double, a run scored and a run batted in while Hillbrands and Avila were
both 2-for-3 at the plate. Hillbrands scored three runs while Avila belted a
triple.
Calvin scored three times in the first, twice in the second, once in the third
and two more times in the fourth to help seal the win.
At 4-4 in league play, Calvin is now tied for fifth place in the MIAA
standings.

By Andrew Knot
The Knights’ record fell to 10-17 after a 7-4 nonconference loss to Davenport
on Tuesday.
The Panthers got on the board early when Jotham Woo singled to right center
field, scoring Brandon Bongard.
The scoring continued in the third inning. Davenport added two more runs in the
top of the inning off a Mike Allen double to center field. The Knights
responded with two runs of their own. Calvin tallied four consecutive singles
to lead off the inning. The third, coming off the bat of Scott Tipton, scored
Grant Van Putten, who was the afternoon’s most active player on the base path,
going 4-for-4 with three stolen bases. Later in the inning, Mike Fuller’s
sacrifice fly scored Scott Tipton to cut the deficit to one. At the conclusion
of three innings, Calvin trailed 3-2.
But the one-run margin was short-lived. Davenport brought two more runs home in
the next inning. After some base hits in the bottom half of the fifth, Calvin
was able to answer with a lone run off a Scott Tipton sacrifice fly. The
Panthers then scored in the fifth and sixth innings. Calvin’s lone response
came in the sixth when Tipton capitalized on an error to reach home from third
base. At the end of six innings, Calvin trailed by three.
That three-point margin would total of 27 hits through six innings, combined to allow only three hits in the
games final three innings. Kyle Spoelma reached first on a single in the bottom
of the ninth, but a double play ended the game at 7-4.
Despite the loss, Coach Sparks remained optimistic about what he saw from his
team.
“I thought this was one of our better games offensively,” he said. “Our
approach at the plate has improved; I’m really pleased with that.”
Davenport pitcher Chad Detweiler, who entered the game in the fourth and
pitched four innings, earned the victory. Calvin’s Grant VanderWall, who
started for the Knights, took the loss
Calvin collected 15 hits in the loss. Freshman Grant VanPutten led the way by
going 4-for-4 at the plate while junior Tyler Tos, junior Ben Cok, junior Drew
Vos and sophomore Steve VanderMolen all had two hits apiece. Calvin is back in
action on Friday when it travels to Alma for a 2 p.m. conference doubleheader
at Klenk Park.
