The Calvin baseball team split a doubleheader with Kalamazoo Friday afternoon
at Calvin Field. Calvin claimed the opener 7-3 and then fell 11-2 in game two.
In the opener, Calvin (9-11 overall, 4-6 MIAA) jumped out to a 3-0 lead only

rally in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by a three-run RBI triple by
junior Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Sophomore Cory Laster (Ludington
HS) was able to come on in relief to gain the save.
Senior Jake VanAlten (Holland Christian HS) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored
including a key bunt single in Calvin's sixth-inning rally. Cok and freshman
Johnathan VanByssum (Timothy Christian HS) both had two hits while junior Tyler
Tos (Wallnut Creek, CA) had a hit and two runs scored. Freshman Grant VanPutten
(Holland Christian HS) went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in. He
also made a spectacular leaping catch in centerfield in the second inning to
rob Kalamazoo of an extra-base hit and a possible run.
Senior Joe Lambers (Grosse Pointe South HS) went the first 5.2 innings,
allowing three hits. Laster struck out one and did not allow a hit in picking
up his first victory of the season.
In game two, Calvin’s pitching staff issued eight walks as the Hornets scored
three runs in the second and seven runs in the third to grab a commanding 10-0
lead. Calvin came up with two runs late in the game and broke up a no-hit bid
by Kalamazoo pitcher Tommy Carion in the process. Sophomore Grant VanderWall
(South Christian HS) took the loss to fall to 2-3 on the year.
The two teams are back in action on Saturday in Kalamazoo for a doubleheader
