Men's Basketball Topples Trine 78-51 - 1992 National Champions Honored;
Women's Basketball Holds on For 55-52 Win at Adrian - Holds Two-Game Lead in
MIAA Standings
Swimming and Diving Teams Split at Kalamazoo in Dual Meet Action

MEN'S BASKETBALL

On a day when Calvin honored its 1992 Men's Basketball National Champions,
thefirst National Championship in Knights history, Calvin defeated Trine
indominating fashion, 78-51.

Trine came into the game second in the MIAA with a 4-1conference record, and
11-5 overall. The Knights were 2-3 in the MIAA and 7-9overall.

Calvin jumped out to an early 12-4 lead over the Thunder, led by sophomoreTyler
Kruis who scored five early points for the Knights. Trine cut the lead to14-12
minutes later, but another layup by Kruis and layups by both junior TomSnikkers
and junior Bryan Powell pushed Calvin's lead to 20-12.

Calvin's lead grew to as much as 13 in the opening period at 4:02 remaining
inthe half on a jumper by sophomore Jordan Mast.

The Thunder closed the first half on a 9-2 run to cut Calvin's lead to 29-23.

The Knights held Trine to just 21.4% in the first half en route to their
sixpoint lead. The Thunder were able to stay in the game via 9-for-9 shooting
fromthe free throw line. Thunder junior guard Ian Jackson, second highest
scorer inthe MIAA at 19.2 points per game, was held to just seven points and
2-for-8shooting in the opening half.

Scoring was much more prevalent in the early parts of the second half, as
theteams fought back and forth. Trine was then energized by a pair of dunks
byjunior Scott Rogers.. With Trine fighting its way back to just a four
pointdeficit at 40-36, the Knights went on an 8-0 run highlighted by a pair
ofblocks by freshman Daniel Stout to build their lead to 48-36.

After a highlight reel dunk by Trine's Jackson, Calvin used a 6-0 run to
buildits lead to 54-38. On the nextpossession, the Thunder would cut the
Knights lead to 14, but that was close asTrine would get as Calvin continued to
build on its advantage.

A three-point shot by Powell and an old-fashioned three-point play by Kruisgave
the Knights momentum for the final five minutes of the game as theycruised to a
78-51 victory.

Calvin had five players with double digit points, led by Snikkers and
Powell,each with 16. Kruis added 14 points and 10 rebounds while junior Matt
DeBoerchipped in 13 and Mast scored 10. Junior David Rietema, despite not
scoring,had a big impact on the game dishing out 11 assists. The Thunder were
led onoffense by Jackson, who finished with 15, while Rogers scored 13 to go
withseven rebounds, and Kent totaled 10 points.

“This is one of the best games and wins that we've had in a really long
time,”said Head Coach Kevin VandeStreek. “Today, I thought our focus was
great forforty minutes, and our intensity was high. There was never a let-down.”

Calvin, now 3-3 in the MIAA and 8-9 overall, will finish the first half of
theMIAA season Wednesday night as it hosts Olivet at 8 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Calvin 55, Adrian 52

ADRIAN – Calvin remained unbeaten on the season but not without a fight as
theKnights gained a 55-52 victory at upset-minded Adrian College
Saturdayafternoon at the Merillat Center. Ranked fourth nationally, Calvin
built a nine-pointsecond half lead on two occasions but could never completely
shake the Bulldogs.

Adrian fought back from a 52-43 lead with 2:24 remaining to close to with
threeat 55-52 with 13 seconds remaining. A Calvin turnover with six seconds
leftgave Adrian a chance to tie the game but Calvin seniwitha clutch steal on the inbounds pass and was able to break away and dribble
therest of the time off the clock.

Calvin led 27-25 at halftime and then built a 49-40 lead in the second
halfbefore Adrian (6-9 overall, 3-6 MIAA) began its comeback run.

Junior Carissa Verkaik had another big game for the Knights, scoring 24
pointson 10 of 15 field goal shooting. Freshman Kayla Engelhard had 11 points,
fourassists and two steals. Junior Julia Hilbrands added seven points off
thebench. Katie Ross led Adrian with 16 points while Senneca Scott had 10
pointsoff the bench.

Calvin shot 40.8 percent from the field but Adrian was able to hang in the
gameby outrebounding Calvin 35-29 with the Knights also committing 18
turnovers.

With the win, Calvin now has a two-game lead in the MIAA standings as
Albiondefeated Hope on Saturday 63-46. Albion and hope are now both 7-2 in
leagueplay, two games behind 9-0 Calvin. Calvin will host Albion Wednesday
night at 6p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING

KALAMAZOO – The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were in
dualmeet action at Kalamazoo on Saturday. In the women’s competition,
Calvindefeated Kalamazoo 170-130. On the men’s side, Calvin was defeated
163-137. Thewomen’s team is now 5-2 on the year in dual meet action while the
Calvin men’s teamis 3-3.

In the women’s meet, Calvin received a win from junior Shelby Cloyd in the1,000
freestyle (10:53.49), junior Stephanie Fox in the 200 freestyle (1:58.62),100
freestyle (54.47) and 200 IM (2:18.96), freshman Erika Waugh in the
100backstroke (1:03.95) and 200 backstroke (2:15.23), junior Elizabeth Counsell
inthe 200 breaststroke (2:30.24), freshman Kathryn Wrobel in the 500 freestyle
(5:19.59)and junior Sam Klaasen on the one-meter diving board (259.45).

In the men’s meet, junior Mathias Bares won the 1,000 freestyle
(10:17.07),junior Stephen Kraft in the 100 backstroke (55.18), freshman Ben
Keller in the100 freestyle, senior Ross Battoclette in the 200 backstroke
(1:59.99) andsophomore Andrew Kraft on the one-meter (357.90) and three-meter
(352.75)boards. Calvin’s 200 medley relay team of Battoclette, senior Greg
Gorham,junior Mark Rushlow and sophomore Andrew Mitchell also took first place
with atime of 1:38.45.

Calvin is back in action next Saturday when both teams host Albion at 1 p.m.
