Members of Calvin Swimming and Diving Program Receive MIAA Honors

WOMEN'S DISTANCE RUNNING

SACRAMENTO, CA -- A third Calvin College graduate has qualified for the U.S.
Olympic Marathon trials January 14 in Houston, Texas. Earlier this year, Calvin
alumn Paul Petersen ('01) and Jed Christiansen ('10) qualified for the men's
trials. This past weekend, 2008 Calvin graduate Christina Overbeck qualified
for the women's trials.

Overbeck qualified for the trials with a time of 2:44.24 at the California
International Marathon on December 4. The time is an Olympic "B" standard but
will allow Overbeck to compete in Houston, Texas next month as "B" standard
qualifiers are allowed to compete but must pay their own way to the site of
competition.

Overbeck was the 15th female finisher and the 125th finisher (male or female)
overall in the race. The California International Marathon is considered one of
the "last-chance" meets for qualification for the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials.
The course follows an historic gold-miners' round beginning at Folsom Dam and
passing through rural Sacramento and ends at the California State Capitol. The
race starts at an elevation of 366 ft. and finishes at an elevation of 26 ft.

Overbeck's race came less than two months after she competed at the Chicago
Marathon Trials where she posted a time of 2:47.07 that was just seven seconds
shy of the U.S. "B" standard for trials qualification.

At Calvin, Overbeck was an NCAA III All-American in both cross country and
track and field. Overbeck originally hails from the state of Washington but now
resides with her husband in Portland, Oregon. At Calvin she was an engineering
major and later worked in Chicago while also doing graduate work at
Northwestern University.
