MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 4, Oneonta State 2
(more to come Saturday morning)

SAN ANTONIO, TX - The Calvin men’s soccer team will face the Battling Bishops
of Ohio Wesleyan in the national championship final Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.
(EST) in San Antonio, Texas. Calvin punched its second berth in the national
championship final in the last three years with a 4-2 semifinal win over
Oneonta State of New York Friday night.

Earlier in the evening, Ohio Wesleyan blanked Montclair State 4-0. In its win
over Oneonta State, Calvin conceded the first goal of the match in just the
seventh minute of play but then scored three unanswered goals in the first half
to take a 3-1 halftime lead.

First half Calvin goals came from senior
Brad Heethuis, freshman Travis Vegter and senior Brad Wassink. In the second
half, Travis Vegter ripped in his second goal of the game to give Calvin a 4-1
lead. Oneonta State then scored a goal in the final 10 minutes of the match to
close out the scoring. Calvin (19-5-2) will be facing Ohio Wesleyan for the
sixth time in NCAA III Tournament play. Ohio Wesleyan has won three of the
prior five NCAA III Tournament matchups but Calvin won the last meeting in NCAA
III Tournament play, winning 2-1 in a second round match in 2005.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 71, Carthage 68
(by sports information student assistant Mark DeHaan)

Hosting the CCIW/MIAA Challenge, Calvin played in the nightcap against
Carthage College after Hope defeated Wheaton in a 79-78 thriller. Head Coach
Kevin Vande Streek came into the match with 299 wins on his Calvin resume’, and
was looking for his 300th.

Carthage would come out strong, led by junior guard Malcolm Kelly. Kelly hit
four early three-pointers, helping Carthage build up a 20-9 lead. Carthage
would hold the double digit lead until two minutes left when Calvin started to
cut into the Red Men's lead. Junior Tom Snikkers scored four straight points,
then sophomore Tyler Kruis added a free throw to cut the lead to 33-28 heading
into half time.

Out of the half, Calvin would play much closer with Carthage than it had in
the first half. A Matt DeBoer jumper two minutes in cut the lead to 35-33
Carthage. Calvin would continue to fight, and with 12:30 remaining, would tie
the game 45-45. Calvin would then build a slight lead, increasing the margin to
as much as five with just over four minutes to go at 64-59.

Stepping up for Carthage was Malcolm Kelly. Kelly would draw a foul on a
three-point shot, and would make all three free throws. A Calvin turnover would
then lead to a Kelly layup, as the game would tie at 64-64.

The lead would then flip-flop as Calvin would hit a free throw to take a
one-point lead. Carthage would take the lead on a jumper by junior Mitch
Thompson but Snikkers would hit another pair of free throws to give Calvin the
one point lead again at 67-66. A layup by Kruis would extend Calvin's lead to
three at 69-66.

The Red Men would then cut the lead to two at 70-68, and with less than ten
seconds left, Malcolm Kelly would have a chance to give Carthage the lead.
Kelly, with 28 points on the night, was 4-8 from three-point range. Kelly would
receive the pass from the right side, and take the three-point shot on the left
side of the top of the key. The shot would pop in and out of the rim, and
Calvin would rebound. A free-throw by Snikkers would give Calvin the
three-point lead, and Kelly would have one more chance from just short of
half-court. This shot too would hit off the iron, and Calvin would claim the
71-68 victory.

Calvin was led in victory by Snikkers and DeBoer, who both scored 15 points.
Both Bryan Powell and Tyler Kruis added nine apiece, with Kruis grabbing six
rebounds. Malcolm Kelly led the Red Men with 28 points, while Mitch Thompson
was the only other Red Men in double digits with 11 points.

The win is the 300th in Coach Vande Streek's Calvin career. Tomorrow, against
Wheaton, will be Coach Vande Streek's 600th game as a collegiate coach.

Hope will play Carthage tomorrow at 3:30 p.m., while Calvin will play Wheaton
at 5:30 p.m. The win puts Calvin's record at 4-3 on the year.

In the opening game, Hope defeated 13th-ranked Wheaton 79-78.

In a game that looked like it would be dominated by Hope early on, Wheaton was
able to stay close using strong free-throw shooting and second chance baskets.
Hope would jump out to a 23-10 lead led by David Krombeen with six points and
Nate Snuggerud with seven points. Two time All-American selection Tim McCrary
would lead the Thunder back and cut the deficit to seven points by halftime, as
McCrary scored 10 points and played all 20 minutes in the first half. Led by
Krombeen, Hope would once again jump out to a double digit lead with 10:55 to
go. Hope would hold the large lead until with just under four minutes to go,
the Thunder would mount a comeback. Wheaton's Tyler Peters would score an old
fashioned three point play and then hit two more free-throws to cut the deficit
to four. A minute later, a three point shot by Jeremy Pflederer would give
Wheaton their first lead since 2-0 at 76-75. The Thunder would hold the lead
until :13 left in the game when a turnover on the in-bounds pass and then a
foul on Wheaton gave Hope a chance to tie. Colton Overway would drain both free
throws to give Hope the 79-78 lead. With time running out, Wheaton would miss
their final shot, giving Hope the thrilling 79-78 victory. Both teams moved to
5-1 on the season.
