MEN’S BASKETBALL
Cornerstone 94, Calvin 77
A slow start to the second half proved to be too much for the Knights to
overcome in their first contest at this year’s Grand Rapids Hall of Fame
Classic hosted by Cornerstone University.
Calvin (3-2) came out with great energy and toughness at the start of the
game. A Tyler Kruis layup, assisted by Tom Snikkers, put the Knights up 8-2
with 17:35 to go in the first half. The Knights trailed by a score of 41-46 at
halftime after a tough, well-played first half by both teams. Sophomore Tyler
Kruis had a big first half, totaling 10 points and 6 rebounds before the break.
The Golden Eagles of Cornerstone (3-4) came out on fire at the beginning of the
second half and extended its lead to 20 points at the 16:04 mark. The Knights
never recovered from the 17-2 run put together by the Golden Eagles.
Tyler Kruis and junior Matt DeBoer led the Knights in defeat with 14 points
apiece. Kruis also grabbed 8 rebounds and shot an impressive 10-10 from the
line. Junior forward Tom Snikkers reached double figures as well, finishing
with 13 points. Cornerstone guards Ronald Bates and Wes Hudson had 23 and 22
points respectively. Fellow backcourt player Justin Yoder contributed with
21.
Calvin looks to bounce back tomorrow night as the Knights make a return trip
down the East Beltline to Cornerstone University for their showdown with
Aquinas College at 6:00 p.m. (EST).
