Three Calvin Volleyball Players Named AVCA Division III All-Americans
VOLLEYBALL
Three members of the Calvin women's volleyball team have been named DivisionIII
All-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. SeniorRebecca
Kamp has been named a first team All-American for the fourth straight year
while
sophomore Megan Rietema has been named a first team All-American forthe first
time. In addition, junior Lizzie Kamp has been named a second team
All-American,
also receiving the honor for the first time. Finally, senior ErinVanderPlas has
been named an honorable mention All-American.
A native of Orland Park, Illinois, Rebecca Kamp is the second four-time
firstteam AVCA All-American in NCAA III women's volleyball history, joining
ChristyOrndorff of Juniata (Pa) who did so from 1991-to-1994. A middle-hitter,
she isalso one of nine four-time All-Americans in Division III women's
volleyballhistory as seven others did so by combination of being named first,
second or thirdteam during their four years of collegiate competition.
This fall, Kamp has been among the nation’s leaders in kills-per-set (3.85),
blocks-per-set(1.37), points-per-set (4.89) and hitting percentage (.401).
During the season,she was named to all-tournament teams at tournaments hosted
by Thomas More andWittenberg. She was also named to the Great Lakes All-Region
tournament thispast weekend. She was also named a two-time MIAA Player of the
Week during theseason and received AVCA Division III National Player of the
Week honors once.She was later named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player for the
third time in fouryears and earned a berth on the All-MIAA first team for a
fourth straight year.Last week she was named to the Great Lakes All-Region team
for the fourthstraight year.
A sophomore setter,Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) has been
ranked nationallythroughout the year in assists-per-set average (10.66) while
directing a Calvinoffense that has been ranked number-one in attack percentage.
She also averagednearly a block-per-set and individual attack percentage of
.325. During theseason, she was named to all-tournament teams at the Thomas
More Invitationaland Wittenberg Great Lakes Regional Challenge. She was a
two-time MIAASpecialty Player of the Week and was named to the All-MIAA first
team for asecond straight year. Last week she was named to the Great Lakes
All-Region teamfor a second straight year and later landed a spot on the NCAA
III All-RegionTournament team hosted by Calvin.
An outside hitter, Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS), Kamp
hasbeen ranked among the nation’s leaders in attack percentage at a .341 clip
whileaveraging 3.25 kills-per-set, 2.19 digs-per-set and 0.42 blocks-per-set.
Shewas named to all-tournament teams at the Thomas More Invitational and
theWittenberg Great Lakes Regional Challenge. She earned MIAA Player of the
Weekhonors once and was named to the All-MIAA first team for a second
straightyear. Last week she was named to the Great Lakes All-Region team for a
thirdstraight year and was later named to the NCAA III Regional All-Tournament
team.
An outside hitter, VanderPlas hails from Cadillac and is a graduate of
McBainNorthern Michigan Christian High School. She was an MIAA Player of the
Weekselection this year and landed a spot on the All-MIAA second team and
GreatLakes All-Region team. During the season, she averaged 2.46 kills-per-set
andattack percentage of .263.
It marks just the second time in Calvin women’s volleyball history that threeof
its players have received All-America accolades in the same year as
JulieDykstra, Roxanne Helmus and Leah Calsbeek did so in 1986.
Calvin finished the 2011 season with an overall record of 33-1. The Knightswere
MIAA regular season and MIAA tournament champions.
