Volleyball Captures MIAA Tournament Title;
Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Defeats Wheaton in Dual Meets

The top-ranked Knights claimed the MIAA championship with a straight-set
victory over rival Hope on Saturday. The MIAA Tournament title is Calvin’s
eighth MIAA Tournament crown including its sixth under current head coach Amber
Warners. Calvin hit .337 as a team including .375 in the opening set to gain
the early momentum.
The Knights took an early lead in first set. Megan Rietema had an ace in the
set’s early stages to put the Knights up 7-4 and Coach Becky Schmidt was forced
to call a timeout as her team trailed 9-4. Hope battled back from there to tie
the game at 14. Kristi Zietse then took to the service line to extend Calvin’s
lead. Zietse aced the Dutch and Lizzie Kamp followed that up with a kill,
assisted by her sister to put the Knights on top by four. Renee DeHaan had two
kills in the set’s final three points to seal the first set by a score of
25-18.
The two squads opened the second set tied at five. Once again, Calvin took a
lead from there, going up five points. The Knights back row showed some flash
in the second set when Zietse and Kelly Gordon kept a point alive and Lizzie
Kamp put up a solo block to make the score 16-12. De Haan and Rietema then
double blocked an attack from Hope’s Mari Schoolmaster to put Calvin on top
17-12 and force another timeout from Schmidt. Lizzie Kamp blasted a kill for
the Knights out of the timeout and Rebecca Kamp put the Knights on top 23-20.
Rietema and Rebecca Kamp combined for a block to give Calvin the second set by
a score of 25-20.
In the third set, Calvin marched to a 7-3 lead but the Dutch tied it at nine
promptly after. Rebecca Kamp blasted an attack off the block later in the set
to put Calvin on top 19-15 continue her stellar night. Rebecca Kamp followed
that up with a kill placed firmly in the back corner to put the Knights five
points away from an MIAA title. Erin VanderPlas closed the set out shortly
thereafter with a kill, and the Knights were crowned the 2011 MIAA champions.
“We played with consistency and responded well to their runs,” said Coach
Amber Warners.
The Knights were led by the Kamp sisters, who each totaled 14 kills. Rebecca
Kamp posted an astonishing .765 attacking percentage, good for a Van Noord
Arena single match record. Megan Rietema dished out 34 assists and Kelly
Gordon led the Knights with 17 digs.
Following the match, Rebecca Kamp was named the MIAA MVP. She was featured on
the All-MIAA first team, as was Lizzie Kamp and Megan Rietema. Erin VanderPlas
and Renee DeHaan were distinguished on the second team.
Calvin will now await its placement in the NCAA III Tournament field which is
expected to be announced on (Monday) November 7 at 11 a.m. via a video stream

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING

Returning to action after a week of practice, the Calvin men's and women's
swimming and diving teams hosted Wheaton Saturday afternoon.
The men were looking for their second win in two years against the Thunder,
and were able to open up the swimming with a first place finish in the 200 Yard
Medley Relay. Calvin would then claim first in the 1000 Yard Freestyle via
Mathias Bares, who won with a time of 10:21.47. In the 200 Yard Free, the men
would take the 1-2-3 finish with Ross Battoclete coming in first at 1:46.00,
Alex Baumann in second at 1:48.07, and Travis Vincent in third at 1:49.55.
The men would continue to bring in the first place finishes as the top spot
was claimed by Greg Gorham in the 100 Yard Breaststroke [1:01.94], Peter
Johnson in the 100 and 200 Yard Butterfly [54.00, 2:01.69], Mark Rushlow in the
50 Yard Freestyle [22.07], Ross Battoclette in the 100 Yard Freestyle [48.01],
and the Calvin A relay team of Battoclete, Baumann, Mitchell, and Rushlow in
the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The Knights would also take first in both diving
events as Andrew Krafft took the 1 Meter Diving with a score 341.55 and the 3
Meter Diving with a score of 270.68.
The men would take the meet by an overall score of 169-129, winning their
second straight meet against the Thunder. “Ross Battoclete lead the charge for
us, in the 200 free and the 100 free,” said Head Coach Dan Gelderloos. “He
really set the tone.”
The women would fight back and forth all day against the Thunder. In the first
event of the day, the Knights A relay team of Fox, Bos, Counsell, and Colasurdo
would take the 200 Yard Medley Relay in a time of 1:52.74, good for first.
Stephie Fox and Elizabeth Counsell would prove to be key for the Knights as
they both took top spots in a number of events. Fox took individual top
finishes in the 100 and 200 Yard Freestyle [55.02, 1:57.95], while Counsell
took first place in the 100 and 200 Yard Breaststroke [1:07.61, 2:30.10]. In
the 200 Yard Individual Medley, the Calvin women took a 1-2 finish as Alexi
Scott would come in first with a time of 2:15.14 while Counsell would follow up
in second at 2:19.64, out-touching the third place Wheaton swimmer by
one-hundredth of a second. The Knights also took first place in both diving
events as Samantha Klaasen won the 3 Meter Dive and the 1 Meter Dive, with
Rebecca Mumby taking second in the 1 Meter Dive.
Heading into the final event a point ahead of Wheaton, the Calvin women had to
win the final event to take the meet, the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The Knights
A relay team of Dhaenes, Colasurdo, Rechel, and Fox would take the final event
in a time of 3:41.88, claiming the meet for Calvin.
The women won the meet by an overall score of 147-137.
“Wheaton is a very formidable opponent. We have a lot of guys this year and
more women than last year, and we're off to a very good start,” said
Gelderloos. “The teams have a lot to fight for. They're going to have a good
year.”
