Looking to bounce back after a tough 2-0 loss at Alma on Wednesday, the
Women’s soccer team hosted 0-12-1 Albion on Saturday.
Looking to get on the board early, the Knights came out shooting. In just the
third minute of play, sophomore Kelly Koets was able to come through for Calvin
as she put a deep shot on net that slipped under the crossbar and over the
keeper to give Calvin the early 1-0 advantage.
The Britons looked to respond quickly as in the fourth minute they forced
Knights sophomore keeper Ashton Hearn into a save on a one touch shot. With
39:10 left in the first half, the Britons had another great chance as a corner
kick made its way into the middle of the field where it was kicked around but
eventually cleared by the Knights defense.
With just over twenty minutes left in the first half, the Knights would add an
insurance goal via freshmen Sam Osterhaven. Osterhaven would receive a throw-in
from sophomore back Laura VanEngen, touch the ball past a defender, then slip
the ball past Albion junior keeper Sam Bowditch to give Calvin the 2-0 lead.
Calvin would take the 2-0 advantage into halftime along with a 13-5 shots
advantage.
The Knights would come out of the half shooting, just as they had in the
first. With 21:35 left in the game, Kelly Koets would add her second goal of
the match as junior Francesca Smith made a great play to pass Koets the ball in
the middle of the field where she put the ball into the bottom left corner of
the net with her left foot for the 3-0 Knights lead.
A minute later, junior Liz Cancel looked to add to the lead as she put a
strong shot on net that was tipped up by the Britons keeper and over the net.
In the 89th minute of play, the Knights would add their final goal of the game
as sophomore Heidi Scholten touched a left footed shot past the Albion keeper
and into the net for her first goal of the season.
Calvin held a 29-6 shots advantage on the day, peppering the Albion keeper.
Calvin made a few changes in their line-up, starting some of their usual
substitutes while playing some of their usual starters in new positions.
“As a team, you can get into a rotation, feel complacent,” said Head Coach
Mark Recker. “We were complacent at Alma, so we made some adjustments in the
system, put different personnel in to challenge each other and the other team.
This team, because of its youth, needs the lesson that you have to be ready to
play at all times. When you are consistently ready, that’s what gives you high
level of play.”
Calvin moves to 7-4 in the MIAA and 7-8 overall. The Knights will return to
action next Thursday when they host the Adrian Bulldogs with the game scheduled
to start at 4 p.m.

to miss some balls we usually put down.” Head coach Warners said after the
match.
After the second set loss, the Knights rolled over the Big Blue in the third
and fourth sets to take the match.
“I was pleased the way we bounced back after losing the second set.” Warners
commented.
Three Knights recorded double digit kills. Junior Lizzie Kamp (Chicago
