CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR AUGUST 23, 2011

Women's Soccer Picked Second in MIAA Preseason Coaches' Poll;
Calvin Cross Country Teams Sit High in Division III Regional Rankings

WOMEN'S SOCCER

The Calvin women's soccer team has been picked to finish second in the first-ever MIAA pre-season coaches' poll. Defending MIAA champion Alma has been picked as the pre-season favorite with the Scots receiving six first place votes and the Knights of Calvin receiving three first place votes. Kalamazoo was picked to finish third and Adrian fourth.

A year ago, Calvin finished second in the MIAA regular season behind Alma and then captured the MIAA Tournament title to gain its sixth straight trip to the NCAA III Tournament. The Knights finished with an overall record of 15-3-2.

The 2011 MIAA season will feature a different look as the conference campaign will feature a double round-robin schedule for the first time since 2005 but will also include a four-team league tournament at the conclusion of the season with the top four teams from the regular season standings advancing to the league tournament. The winner of the MIAA Tournament will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament. Over the past five years, the league featured a single round schedule for the regular season and a six or four team league tournament. The 2011 season will be the first year that there will be both a double round-robin regular season and a post-season league tournament.
