Melissa Oosterhouse and Monica Bressler Named Capital One Academic All-Americans
Calvin College juniors Melissa Oosterhouse and Monica Bressler have been named Capital One Academic All-Americans in the women's college at-large division as selected by the College Sports Information Director's Association of America (CoSIDA). Oosterhouse has been named to the first team while Bressler has been named to the third team.
The Women's At-Large program for Academic All-America includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, tennis and water polo.
Both individuals are receiving Capital One Academic All-America honors for the second straight year. Oosterhouse was also a first team choice last year while Bressler is a repeat third team selection.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Oosterhouse is completing a busy week of honors as she was named the recipient of the MIAA's Sheila Wallace Kovalchik Award earlier this week. A four-year member of the Calvin women's tennis team, Oosterhouse recently qualified for ITA Division III All-America honors by reaching the Round of 16 at the NCAA III singles tournament in Claremont, California. Her appearance at the 2011 national tournament was her second straight. At the 2010 NCAA III singles tournament, Oosterhouse was named the recipient of the prestigious NCAA Elite 88 Award for holding the highest GPA of any competitor at her respective NCAA championship event.
During her four years, Oosterhouse served as the team's number-one singles player in every match she has competed in. During her career, Oosterhouse fashioned a singles record of 78-14 and a doubles record of 60-28. She is the Calvin career leader in singles victories.
Oosterhouse was a four-time first team All-MIAA selection is one of only 13 individuals in MIAA women's tennis history to do so. In 2009, she was selected as the MIAA recipient of the Sue Little Sportmanship Award. In 2011, she was named the recipient of the MIAA's Karen Caine Scholar-Athlete Award. In 2010 and 2011, she was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player.
In 2008 and 2009, she was a part of Calvin teams that finished as league runner-ups. In 2010, she led a Calvin team that captured its first MIAA title since 1982 and gained its first-ever NCAA III Tournament berth. Calvin's record during her four years was 58-29.
Oosterhouse was recently graduated from Calvin with a biology major and a minor in biochemistry. She carried a 3.94 grade point average and was a regular member of the
Calvin Dean's List and MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
Oosterhouse is the first individual in Calvin women's tennis history to receive Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA.
Bressler is from Sandusky, Ohio. She is a graduate of Perkins High School.
At Calvin, Bressler was a four-year member of the Calvin women's swimming and diving program and a three-time All-MIAA selection.
At the MIAA Championships this past February, Bressler was the league champion in the 100 backstroke (59.04) and 200 backstroke (2:09.02). In 2010, she captured league titles in the 50 freestyle (23.76), 100 backstroke (58.34) and 200 backstroke (2:09.94).
She also qualified for the 2010 NCAA III Championships in the 100 and 200 backstroke events and in several relays.
She was also a national qualifier for the 2009 NCAA III Championships and picked up All-America honors twice as she was a member of Calvin's eighth place 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams. She has also been a member of three honorable mention All-America relay teams at Calvin, placing 10th in the 200 medley relay at the 2009 national meet and 12th in 200 medley relay and 16th in the 400 medley relay at the 2010 national meet.
She has also helped the Calvin women's swimming and diving team capture four MIAA titles and finish seventh at the 2009 NCAA III Championships and 24th at the 2010 NCAA III Championships.
An accounting major, Bressler was recently graduated from Calvin while maintaining a 3.75 grade point average. She has also been a regular member of the Calvin Dean's List and the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
Bressler is one of three individuals in Calvin women's swimming and diving history to receive Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA. Becky Weima was a second team selection in 2006 and a first team pick in 2007. Cara VanWoerkom was a second team selection in both 2008 and 2009.
Combined, Calvin has now had its athletes receive CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades 89 times including 58 times in the last 14 years.
