ALBION - Calvin's run through the MIAA Tournament came to a conclusion
Saturday afternoon as the Knights were defeated by defending champion Kalamazoo
College 6-0 in the MIAA Tournament final. With the victory, Kalamazoo gains the
MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin concludes its season
with an overall record of 16-8.

In the regular season meeting between the two teams played back at Calvin on
April 13, Calvin claimed two of the three doubles points but Kalamazoo was not
to be surprised on Saturday as the Hornets ripped off three straight doubles
victories, winning 8-2 at No. 1 doubles and 8-5 at both No. 2 and No. 3
doubles. Kalamazoo then closed out the victory with straight set wins at No. 3,
No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

At the conclusion of the tournament, the All-MIAA awards were announced and
several Calvin individuals were honored. Senior Andrew DeVlieger (Grand
Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) was named to the All-MIAA first team while
senior Roland Eldridge (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg HS) and sophomore
Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) were named to the All-MIAA second team.

DeVlieger went 4-2 in MIAA singles play this spring, playing primarily at No.
1 singles. He was also 5-0 in doubles play in MIAA dual matches. He added a
victory at No. 1 singles in the MIAA Tournament semifinals against Hope.

Eldridge was 2-3 in MIAA dual matches playing primarily at No. 2 singles. In
doubles, he was 4-1. He then picked up a win in a first round MIAA Tournament
match against Adrian.

Phillips meanwhile was undefeated for Calvin in MIAA singles matches,
compiling a 5-0 record at No. 4 singles. He teamed with Eldridge to record a
4-1 doubles mark against league opponents and then picked up MIAA Tournament
wins against Adrian and Hope. He finished the season with an overall singles
record of 14-4 and an 11-match win streak in singles play.

In addition, Eldridge was named the recipient of MIAA's Allen B. Stowe
Memorial Award. The award is a sportsmanship award given each year to an MIAA
player in memory of the late Dr. Allen B. Stowe of Kalamazoo College. Eldridge
is the ninth individual in Calvin history to receive the prestigious honor and
the first since Ricky Tilton was the co-recipient in 2008.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

For the second straight year, Calvin College senior Melissa Oosterhouse has
been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player in women's tennis. A native of Grand
Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Oosterhouse
recently completed an MIAA career that saw her go 29-3 against league foes at
No. 1 singles. This year, she posted an 8-0 record in MIAA dual match
competition while also combining with senior Kaitlin Spoelhof to record an 8-0
record against league teams in doubles play.

At the MIAA Tournament this weekend, Oosterhouse also posted singles victories
in tournament matches against Saint Mary's and Adrian. In addition, Oosterhouse
has been named the recipient of the MIAA's Karen Caine Scholar-Athlete Award.
The annual award is given each year to an MIAA women's tennis player in honor
of former Adrian College women's tennis coach Karen Caine. Oosterhouse is the
second individual from Calvin to receive the award as Calvin's Rachel
Strikwerda was so honored in 2010.

Oosterhouse has also been named to the All-MIAA first team for the fourth
consecutive year. Along with Albion's Shelly Zamler (also a four-time All-MIAA
pick as of this year), Oosterhouse is one of 13 individuals in MIAA women's
tennis history to earn first team All-MIAA accolades four straight years. She
is just the second from Calvin to do so as Allison DeWys was a four-time first
team All-MIAA selection from 1995-to-1998.

Oosterhouse is joined on the All-MIAA first team from Calvin by senior Kaitlin
Spoelhof. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School,
Spoelhof is receiving first team All-MIAA honors for the third straight year.
Over the course of her Calvin career, she was 25-7 in singles play in MIAA dual
matches. She was 7-1 in league dual matches this year while playing at No. 2
singles. She also posted singles wins against Saint Mary's and Adrian this
weekend at the MIAA Tournament. Her mother - Jan Boerema-Spoelhof - was a first
team All-MIAA selection in 1983 and 1984.

Calvin senior Michelle Busscher has also been named to the All-MIAA second
team. A native of Whitehall and a graduate of Muskegon Western Michigan
Christian High School, Busscher was 7-1 at No. 3 singles this year in MIAA dual
matches. She also went 2-0 in singles play this weekend at the MIAA Tournament.
Over the course of her collegiate career, she was 26-5 in singles action in
MIAA dual match competition.

The Knights took the opening half of Saturday’s doubleheader with Trine by a
score of 2-1 after a complete game, five-hit performance from junior Joe
Lambers.
The game was held at Calvin field because of flooding problems at Trine’s
field, but the Knights were listed as visitors on the scoreboard.

Ben Cok became the Knights opening baserunner when he singled up the middle.
But his efforts were squandered when Calvin hit into an inning-ending double
play.

Trine responded with a hit of their own in the bottom half of the inning but,
similar to the Knights, they were unable to translate that to runs.

The Knights put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Senior Andrew Bosma
got things started with a singleand sophomore Tyler Tos advanced him to third
with a double to center field. Drew Vos bunted him home, giving the Knights a
1-0 lead.

Calvin would score again in the fifth inning. Lead-off hitter Mike Fuller
singled and moved to second on a Ryan Smith wild pitch. After moving to third
off a Cok bunt, Fuller would score in the same manner.

Trine got one run back in the bottom of the seventh. Nick Beitler reached
first on a fielder’s choice that effectively batted in a run. But Lambers
would find his groove, striking out Ryan Smith to end the game.

Andrew Bosma was 3-4 for the Knights and scored a run. The win brought
Lambers’ record to 2-3 and Smith was given the loss, making him 2-5 on the
year.

Calvin squandered a three run lead in the second game of Saturday’s
doubleheader with Trine, losing 6-5.

Both teams got on the board in the second inning. Scott Tipton sparked the
Knights’ offense with a sharp double down the left field line. Freshman Kyle
Spoelma’s single to center field would score Tipton from second, putting the
Knights’ on the board first.

Trine’s lead-off hitter, Josh Rivera, countered that with an RBI in the bottom
half of the inning. His single through the right side scored Mike Sentman.
Calvin broke the game open in the fourth inning. Again, Scott Tipton was the
first Knight on base, drawing a walk. Tos also walked and Tipton took
advantage of a Thunder defensive mishap to steal an unmanned second base.
Spoelma then knocked in another run. After a Trine pitching change, the
Knights picked up right where they left off. Jake VanAlten and Peter Steiner
each contributed RBI’s to bring the score to 5-1 going into the bottom of the
inning.

Trine got a run back in the bottom of the fourth off a Ryan Smith double,
scoring Josh Rivera. But the Thunder did the most of their damage in the
sixth. Trailing by three runs, Smith hit another single and Kyle Kleiman
walked. After another walk, Brian Hoeper knocked a double to left field and
scored two runs. Zachary Ebersole then grounded out to move another run across
the plate and Nick Beitler executed a suicide squeeze to bring the winning run
across the plate.

In the seventh, the Knights were retired in order to finish out the game.

Jeff Groenewald got the loss for the Knights and Spoelma had another big day
at the plate, going 2-3 with two RBI’s.

Calvin closed out its 2011 campaign by dropping both ends of a doubleheader to
visiting Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex. Saint
Mary's took the opener 12-1 and then edged the Knights 2-1 in game two.

In game one, Saint Mary's blew the game open with a seven-run second inning on
the strength of five hits and four walks. Calvin collected five hits and pushed
across its only run in the fifth inning on a groundout by junior Marie Prins
that plated senior Sass Van Rooyen who had reached base on a leadoff double.
Calvin had five hits in the loss including two off the bat of senior Heather
Sanderson who ripped a triple to right-center in the third inning. Sophomore
Shelby Mast took the loss for the Knights in the pitching circle.

In game two, Saint Mary's scored single runs in the third and fourth innings
to take a 2-0 lead. Calvin cut the gap in half with a run in the fifth,
capitalizing on a pair of Saint Mary's errors. In the sixth, Prins led off with
a single and move to third base with one out. Sophomore Lauren Spoelstra then
hit a slow chopper to the pitcher with Prins attempting to score from third on
the play. Prins slid under the tag of the Saint Mary's catcher but was ruled
out by the home plate umpire.

Saint Mary's then then shut down Calvin in order in the seventh to hold off
any comeback bid by the Knights.

Mast took the look for Calvin while Callie Selner picked up the win for Saint
Mary's with Monica Palicki credited with the save.

Calvin closes out its season with an overall record of 6-28 and a league mark
of 4-10 in conference play. The Knights finish tied for seventh place in the

CALVIN SPRING CLASSIC 5K RECAP
(written by Calvin Director of Alumni Relations Mike VanDenend)

The 2011 edition of the Calvin Spring Classic 5k and Karen Muyskens Fun Run
drew an unofficial record field of over 1,100 participants and resulted in Koby
Hagen of Ada achieving the title as women's overall champion and Matt McSween
of Grand Rapids taking the men's overall crown.

The 21st annual event had an emotional beginning as Dr. Harold Schynders, who
suffered a heart attack while walking in last year's Classic, served as
honorary starter. Schynders introduced Alex and Jan Antalis of Fort Wayne,
Ind., Calvin parents and the persons who immediately attended to him last year
and helped saved his life. Alex is a physician and Jan a nurse.

Hagen took first place among women with a time of 18:31, while McSween ran
the 3.1-mile course in 16:27. The school challenge competition was won by
Byron Center Christian (number of registrations), and the corporate challenge
winner was Team Racir (competitive finish scoring).

The Calvin Spring Classic is a TAC-certified run entirely on Calvin College
campus roads, starting and ending near the Prince Conference Center and taking
runners under the East Beltline, through campus roadways to East Paris Avenue
and back.M The Karen Muyskens Family Fun Run is named after the late Dr. Karen
Muyskens, a Calvin chemistry professor.

Classic Race Management handled the timing; see www.classicrace.com for full
