OLIVET – Calvin completed a four-game weekend sweep of Olivet Saturday
afternoon, defeating the Comets 3-2 and 5-3 in a conference doubleheader. The
pair of victories came on the heels of a doubleheader sweep over Olivet Friday
afternoon that saw the Knights win by scores of 7-4 and 4-2. Calvin is now
17-13 overall and in second place in the MIAA standings with a 12-8 conference
record.

Calvin received stellar pitching performances in all four games of the series.
In Saturday’s opener, junior lefthander Joe Lambers tossed a complete-game
one-hitter to pick up his first victory of the season. Olivet scored a run in
the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead .

Calvin tied the game in the top of the fifth on a groundout by sophomore Tyler
Toss that plated pinch-runner David Noorman who had moved to third base on an
error and then scored on the grounder by Tos. Two batters later, senior first
baseman Peter Steiner then delivered a two-run homer – his third long ball of
the spring – to give Calvin a 3-1 lead. Olivet later scored on a wild pitch in
the sixth but Lambers was able to work a one-two-three seventh to complete the
one-run victory.

In game two, freshman Grant VanderWall went five innings to gain his third
victory of the spring while seniors Derick Vargas and Jeff Groenewold each
tossed one inning of relief.

Calvin scored a pair of runs in the first as sophomore Ben Cok boomed his third
triple of the spring and later scored on an error with Steiner later reaching
base on a walk and also scoring on an Olivet error. The Comets tacked on two
runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Calvin came back with two runs
in the top of the second to grab a 4-2 lead as Steiner drew a bases-loaded walk
and senior Andrew Bosma delivered a run-scoring single. Calvin added an
insurance run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Steiner.

Olivet scored an unearned run in the sixth off of Vargas but did no further
damage as Groenewold pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up his third save of
the season.

Calvin had seven hits in the victory while Olivet had just four.

Calvin returns to action next Thursday when it travels to Trine University for
a conference doubleheader slated to start at 2 p.m.

bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift
Calvin to a 6-5 game two victory. The win allowed the Knights to salvage a

In game two, Calvin took an early 3-1 lead but Albion stormed back with three
runs in the top of the second to take a 4-3 lead. Calvin tied the game 4-4 in
the fourth inning as Sheehan collected a two-out single, stole second and
scored othreatened to score over the next three innings but neither team could scratch
across a run, sending the contest into extra-innings.
In the top of the eighth, Albion took a 5-4 lead on a pair of hits including a
run-scoring double. In the bottom half of the eighth, freshman Becca Jarvis
struck out but reached base as the third strike eluded the Albion catcher.
Sheehan then reached base on an error and Sanderson walked, loading the bases
with one out. Junior Marie Prins then belted a single to left to score Jarvis
with the tying run. Freshman Lina Avila then bounced into a fielder's choice
with Sheehan thrown out at the plate on the play, leaving the bases full with
two outs. DeWeerd then looped a single into shallow center, bringing home
Sanderson with the game-winning run.
