Women's Tennis Edged by Nationally-Ranked Grand Valley State

TheCalvin women’s tennis team played host to the undefeated Grand ValleyState
Lakers on Wednesday afternoon. The game was played inside theHuizenga Tennis
and Track Center due to weather.
This was a special day for three Calvin seniors. Wednesday markedthe last time
that Melissa Oosterhouse, Kaitlyn Spoelhof, and MichelleBusscher would play a
match in a Calvin uniform in Grand Rapids.
“These seniors have given a lot to this program” Calvin head coachJerry Bergsma
said after the match. It has been an honor to coachthem.
Thesethree seniors would prove to be very helpful to the Knights. Calvinlost
the match 5-4 to the Lakers, ranked 16th nationally in NCAADivision II tennis,
and it was only fitting that the seniors scored theonly four points for the
Knights.
Grand Valley took two of the three doubles flights. The loneKnights point came
at first doubles where Oosterhouse and Spoelhofdefeated Chelsea Johnston and
Darylann Troit 8-3.
The singles matches were split. Calvin took the top three whilefalling at the
fourth, fifth, and sixth flights. Melissa Oosterhousebeat Tana Hayes 6-1, 6-1
at first singles. The most thrilling matchwas at second singles. Katie
Spoelhof outlasted Niki Shipmen 7-6(0),2-6, 6-3 in a match that lasted about
two and a half hours. MichelleBusscher beat Chelsea Johnson 6-2, 6-4.
Grand Valley State bounced back to win 7-5, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-3 atfourth and fifth
singles. This knotted the score at four. JackieShipmen closed out the match
and beat Elise Doezema 6-4, 6-4.
“I almost expect them (the seniors) to play great every game”Bergsma said. To
actually see it is a great. I couldn’t be happierfor them.”
The Knights will close out the conference season against the Scots of Alma next
week.
