ADRIAN, MI - The Calvin women's track and field team took another step forward
towards extending its current 21-year MIAA championship streak as the Knights
took first place at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian College on Saturday.
Calvin posted a first place total of 996 points with Hope second with 933.5
points. The MIAA Jamboree - held in mid-April each year, is worth 50 percent of
the final MIAA standings with the MIAA Field Day worth the remaining 50
percent. The 2011 MIAA Field Day is scheduled for May 5 and 6 at Olivet
College.

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

ADRIAN, MI - Calvin will face an uphill battle to maintain its 17-year MIAA
championship streak. On Saturday, the Knights were defeated by rival Hope
College by a 35-point margin at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian College with
Hope taking first with 887.5 points and Calvin second at 842.5 points.

Saturday's outcome marked the first time Calvin had not won an MIAA Jamboree -
a format that came into place in 2008. The MIAA Jamboree - held in mid-April
each year, is worth 50 percent of the final MIAA standings with the MIAA Field
Day worth the remaining 50 percent. Calvin could still gain at least a share of
the final MIAA title, but would need to finish first at the MIAA Field Day in
order to do so. This year's MIAA Field Day is scheduled for May 5 and 6 at
Olivet College. The MIAA Jamboree uses a true team scoring format with every
place counting in the final point total. Hope's last win over Calvin in track
and field came in an MIAA dual meet in 2007.

Calvin took first place in seven events led by its distance crew and its
jumpers but Hope's strength in the sprints and hurdles proved crucial in the
final outcome.

Event winners for the Calvin men included:

*Senior Dan Kerr in the men's 10,000 meters (31:55.55).

*Senior Alex Wrobel in the 1,500 meters (3:59.93).

*Junior Carson Sterchi in the 800 meters (1:57.78).

*Junior Nick Kramer in the 5,000 meters (15:14.89).

*Freshman Ryan Huffman in the long jump (22-1).

*Freshman Kyle Jasperse in the triple jump (45-1 3/4).

Calvin will return to action next Saturday when it competes at the Aquinas
Open at Houseman Field.

BASEBALL
Kalamazoo 5, Calvin 4
Kalamazoo 11, Calvin 3

Two days after being swept by Calvin, Kalamazoo turned the tables on the
Knights, taking both ends of a doubleheader on a rain-slickened Calvin Field
Saturday afternoon. Kalamazoo took game one 5-4 behing a late-game rally and
then feasted on six Calvin errors to gain an 11-3 game two win. With the sweep,
Kalamazoo moves into a tie for second place with Hope at 8-6 in the MIAA
standings while Calvin falls back into fourth place, dipping to 8-8 in
conference play and 12-13 overall. Saturday's doubleheader was scheduled to be
played at Kalamazoo on Saturday but was moved to Calvin because of unplayable
field conditions at Kalamazoo. Although Calvin played on its home field
Saturday, the Knights were the visiting team in each game.

In game one, Calvin grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning on an
RBI double by sophomore Tyler Tos and a sacrifice fly by senior Andrew Bosma.
Kalamazoo answered right back however with three runs in the bottom half of the
fifth, using four hits and a walk to take a 4-3 lead. Kalamazoo then scored an
imprortant insurance run in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. Calvin rallied in the
top of the seventh, placing runners on second and third with one out. Sophomore
Ben Cok delivered in one run on a sacrifice fly to deep left to make the score
5-4 but Kalamazoo reliever Jake Holloway was able to bear down to gain a
strikeout to extinguish the threat and gain the save.

Senior Peter Steiner was 2-for-3 for Calvin the loss while junior Joe Lambers
(0-3) took the loss in five innings of work for the Knights.

In game two, six Calvin errors led to nine unearned Kalamazoo runs. Calvin
held early momentum on the strength of a two-run homer to left by Steiner in
the top of the third that gave the Knights a 3-2 lead but Kalamazoo scored four
runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-3 lead and never looked back. The
Hornets added two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to close out the
scoring.

Tos had two of Calvin's six hits in the loss. Steiner's homerun was his second
of the spring. Freshman Grant VanderWall took the loss for Calvin to fall to
2-2 on the year.

Calvin will host Davenport University on Tuesday in a non-conference (nine
inning) game at Calvin Field.

Calvin battled hard against rival Hope Saturday afternoon but came up just
short in taking the outright 5-4 loss to the Dutch. After falling behind 1-2
in doubles, the Knights swept the top three singles matches and led 4-3 going
into the final two singles matches but the depth of the Hope lineup prevailed.
Starting out with a trio of doubles matches, the Knights number one pair of
Melissa Oosterhouse and Kaitlin Spoelhof defeated Hope’s Katherine Garcia and
Leah LaBarge 8-1. But the Dutch responded by winning the other two matches as
Shelby Schulz and Pickelman defeated Calvin’s Michelle Busscher and Elise
Doezema 8-3, and Casey Baxter and Mallory Smith defeated Calvin’s Lauren
Schlagenhauf and Bethany Zoerhof 8-3.
“I think we got off to a little bit of a slow start and I think we can play
better doubles than that,” Coach Bergsma said after. “Hope has traditionally
been strong in their doubles play so we knew we had to bring our best there.”
In singles, Oosterhouse took down Hope’s Garcia in the top seeded match 6-4,
6-3. It was a long battle of a match in which both players played very well
but Oosterhouse managed to come out on top with some key breaks.

Spoelhof won her #2 singles match against Hope’s LaBarge 6-2 6-1, with
Spoelhof coming back from a 2-1 deficit in the first set to take 10 straight
games and the match win.

Busscher then gained a key victory in the #3 singles match against Hope’s
Casey Baxter 6-3 6-4. With Hope’s Schulz defeating Schlagenhauf in the #4
singles match, Calvin still had a 4-3 lead going into the final two matches.
“I thought we fought back well in singles with key wins from our seniors,”
Bergsma said. “We came up just a little short but I’m pleased with the effort
for sure.”
Doezema was defeated in the number 6 singles match as Hope’s Smith cruised to
a 6-1 6-0 victory to even the score at 4-4 overall. Calvin’s Jordan Ipema
against Melissa Bieri became the final showdown in the 5 singles match, with
the winner determining which team would win.
The two battled hard in the first set with Ipema jumping ahead 5-4. Bieri
then won three clutch games in a row to win the first set 7-5, and then cruised
in the second to a 6-3 victory, giving the Dutch the team win.

“The experience they have [seniors] is invaluable,” Bergsma said. “The
intensity of a rivalry like this does not phase them too much and it brings out
the best in them.”

The next action for the Knights will be Monday April 18 at home against the
Saint Mary’s Belles. Those matches are set to kick off at 4 p.m.
