Calvin split a home doubleheader Saturday against Albion but still won 3 of 4
overall against the Britons after dropping an extra-innings thriller in the
first game and winning the second game by a 9-3 score.

The Knights gave up a run in the top of the eighth and were unable to tie the
score in the bottom half in the front end of the double-header, losing by a
score of 3-2. Junior Joe Lambers pitched seven innings, giving up a pair of
earned runs off of 5 hits and 3 walks. Lambers struck out 3 hitters before
being relieved by freshman Cory Laster, who the loss in his inning of work
although the run was unearned.

In the first game Albion and Calvin exchanged early blows as both teams scored
two runs in the first three innings and then went 4 full innings of scoreless
baseball before the Britons struck again in extra innings.

Calvin’s Mike Fuller went 2 for 4 in the game with a run and senior Andrew
Bosma went 1 for 1 with a sac fly to drive in both of the Knights’ runs. The
Knights had chances to take the lead in late innings but were unable to get
that final hit to drive in the go ahead run.

The Knights committed three errors in the field in the first game, a key
factor in setting up a lot of the Briton’s offense in the game. With the loss,
Laster moves to 2-1 on the year. Albion’s Peter Salens earned the win and
moved to 1-3 this season.

The second game featured a matchup between Calvin freshman Grand VanderWall
and Albion’s Brett Timmer. The Knights’ offense came alive in the game early
as Calvin tagged Timmer for four runs [three earned] in the first two innings,
jumping out to a 4-1 lead. In the first inning Ben Cok hit a one out single
and then scored off a triple by Bosma, who then scored as well off a Peter
Steiner sac fly. In the second inning Timmer struggled with his command as he
walked 3 of the first 4 batters before being relieved. Calvin’s Bosma would
single in two runs then with the bases loaded.
The Knights would add to the lead in the bottom of the fifth as well as they
scored 5 runs all with two outs in the inning to take the lead at 9-1. Cok
highlighted the inning with a two run home run to left to score the eighth and
ninth runs, his first of the year.

VanderWall pitched 6 innings and gave up 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks,
striking out two as well. The win improves VanderWall to 2-1 on the year.
Albion’s Timmer falls to 0-1. Calvin’s Jeff Groenewold also pitched a
scoreless inning, surrendering only a hit in that final frame.

Cok went 3 for 3 with a walk in the game with two RBIs and two runs. Bosma
also had 3 hits in 4 at bats and drove in two runs while also scoring one
himself. Jake Van Alten was the only other multihit Knight in the game, going
2 for 3 with a walk and scoring two runs.

With the split, the Knights take 3 of 4 overall from the Britons and move to
10-11 on the season and 6-6 in the conference. The next action for the Knights
will be against Kalamazoo on April 14 and 16, with the first doubleheader
taking place at home at 2 p.m.
