Men's Basketball Falls to Benedictine 72-69 at Elmhurst Bluejay Classic

ELMHURST, IL - The Knights basketball team found itself on the losing end of
another close result on Wednesday night, falling 82-79 to Benedictine in the
Bluejay Classic at Elmhurst College. Calvin will face DePauw in Thursday’s
consolation game at 6:30 p.m. (EST). Elmhurst defeated DePauw 61-59 in the
second first round game Wednesday night.
Calvin traded points with the Eagles from tip-off, periodically falling behind
by margins of seven or eight. The match began, however, with Calvin’s Brent
Schuster scoring the Knights’ opening nine points. Schuster finished the half
with 13 points and led the Knights with 18 overall.
Shortly before halftime, the Eagles opened up a 41-34 lead. Bolstered by a
Jordan Brink three-pointer, Calvin was able to cut the lead to 41-39 at
halftime.
But Benedictine pulled away after the break. Calvin was playing catch-up for
the remainder of the first half. The Knights trailed by 11 five minutes in to
the half. Brad Schnyders then used his size advantage to tally six quick
points for the Knights, who eventually cut the lead to 58-55.
But once again, Benedictine put distance between themselves and Calvin. Late
in the game, a couple of Tom Snikkers’ lay-ups cut the Eagles’ lead to three
points. Benedictine remained strong at free throw line. Brink hit another
three with eight seconds remaining to make it a two point game. Jerrell
Tribble then made one of two free-throws, giving Calvin one last shot to tie.
Schuster grabbed the rebound and dished to Bryan Powell as an outlet. Powell
created some space at the top of the key but his deep three-ball found the
front iron, leaving the Knights just short.
Calvin shot 53.3% from the field to Benedictine’s 46.6%, but the Knights were
outrebounded 36-29. The loss drops the Knights to 4-6 overall. Benedictine is
now 6-4 overall.
“It’s great to play really good teams. They hold us accountable. And we’ll
keep learning,” said Coach Kevin Vande Streek after the game.
Benedictine was led by Cameron Snelling and Nate Green who collected 22 points
apiece.
Thursday’s consolation game will feature just the second meeting between
Calvin and DePauw including the first since the two teams met in the 1990 NCAA
III Final four.
