MEN'S GOLF

MARSHALL - The Calvin men's golf team took first place at an MIAA jamboree
hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club on Wednesday afternoon, posting a
team score of 303 strokes. The jamboree was the second of the year on the
league schedule.

Calvin finished four strokes ahead of runner-up Trine and seven strokes ahead
of third place Hope. After two league jamborees, Calvin is now in third place
in the overall MIAA standings with 609 strokes, one stroke behind Olivet (608)
and seven strokes behind league-leading Trine (602). Hope is in fourth place
with 613 strokes overall.

Sophomore Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was the catalyst
behind Calvin's surge on Wednesday with a round of 72 that allowed him to gain
a share of medalist honors. Sophomore Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo
Christian HS) was close behind with a round of 74 that was good for a tie for
fourth place individually. Rounding out Calvin's finishers were senior Eric
Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 77, senior Jess
Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with an 80 and freshman
Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with an 84.

Kuiper's score allowed him to earn medalist honors for the first time in his
collegiate career. Kuiper is the first Calvin player to earn medalist honors at
an MIAA jamboree since 2004 when Jeff TenBrink shared medalist honors at a
jamboree hosted by Olivet at the Bedford Valley Country Club.

MEN’S SOCCER
KENOSHA, WI – The top-ranked Calvin men’s soccer team used a pair of second
half goals to record a 2-0 victory at Carthage College Wednesday night. The
Knights are now 5-0 on the year heading into their final non-conference game –
a 3 p.m. tilt at Hiram College (OH) on Saturday.

Calvin held off an upset-minded Carthage team that had handed
nationally-ranked Loras College a 2-1 defeat a week before behind a penalty
kick by senior Scott Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in the 59th minute
of play and a scramble goal by senior Brad Heethuis (Jenison/Unity Christian
HS) with exactly five minutes left to play.

Carthage (2-3-1 overall) outshot Calvin 15-10 but Calvin goalkeeper Ryan Bratt
(Silver Spring, MD/Washington Christian Academy) was up to the task, making
four saves to record his third shutout victory of the year.

In the first half, Calvin came close to scoring on two occasions as a header
by senior Kyle Billin (Hudsonville/Unity Christian skimmed off the crossbar.
Moments later, Heethuis sent a shot just over the net after receiving a pass in
the box.

In the second half, Calvin player was pulled down from behind in the box,
resulting in a red card for a Carthage player and a penalty kick for Calvin
that was taken by Hooker.

Despite trailing 1-0 and playing a man short, Carthage continued to push for
the tying goal until Heethuis was able to put the game out of reach with five
minutes left to play.

The two teams were credited with six shots apiece in the second half. Calvin
also finished the game with an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.

VOLLEYBALL

(written by sports information student assistant Derek Neice)
Fresh from knocking off rival Hope College in a four set match this past
weekend, the now 4th ranked Knights of Calvin College continued on track
Tuesday evening as they defeated the Saint Mary’s Belles in three straight sets
(25-20, 25-18, 25-18).
After defeating the Dutchmen on Saturday, Calvin moved up four spots to its
present #4 ranking in the national poll with Hope dropping to 6th. Tuesday’s
three set sweep of the Belles maintained a spotless record thus far for the
Knights’ 2010 campaign as Calvin improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the
conference.
Junior Becca Kamp (Orland Park, IL), averaging 3.63 kills a match coming into
the day, led all players with 14 kills. Calvin juniors Erin Vander Plas
(Cadillac, MI) and Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids, MI) added 10 and eight kills
respectively, and sophomore Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL) also finished with
nine kills. Freshman setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids, MI) tallied 29
assists in only two sets of play, and senior Carolyn Nelson (Milan, MI) added
11 assists in the final frame. Calvin junior libero Kelly Peterson (Ramsey,
MN) had 16 digs in the game, and Lizzie Kamp also added nine digs of her own to
go with her nine kills.
“We strive to open up every match the same way with the same intensity,” coach
Amber Warners commented. “I don’t think we quite did that tonight but the good
thing is that a win’s a win and we’ll keep moving forward.”
The first set saw both teams battle hard throughout the entirety with the
Knights taking a firm lead later in the frame. Calvin’s largest lead came when
they led 22-16. The Belles fought for a few more points before the Knights
closed things out at 25-20 and a 1-0 advantage.
The second set again showed the tenacity of Saint Mary’s as the Belles took an
early lead and then kept the score close as the set progressed. Calvin showed
why it’s ranked in the top five in the nation though as they used a 6-0 run to
cement the set, winning 25-18.
The third set started out with a scare as Saint Mary’s looked dominant early.
The Belles led 16-11 midway through the set, but the Knights thundered back
thereafter, using a 14-2 run to finish the set and get the overall sweep in its
seventh win of the season.
“We’re going to take the things we need to refine and work on them tomorrow,”
Warners said of the upcoming tournament this weekend. “and we’re going to come
ready to play some great competition.”
Calvin volleyball is back on the court when they travel on September 17-18 to
participate in the Wittenberg Border Battle Tournament.
