Like the opening two games against Alma on Monday, Calvin received sterling pitching performances on Wednesday as juniors Keith Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) and Jeff Groenewold (Chicago, IL/Timothy Christian HS) tossed complete-game victories.
In the opener, Spoelstra (6-3) struck out four, walked three and scattered five hits. Alma scored a run in the bottom of the second but Calvin came back with two in the third as sophomore Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) drove in a run with a single and later scored on an Alma error.
Calvin added an insurance run in the fifth as junior Andrew Bosma (Holland/Holland Christian HS) led off with a double, stole third and then scored on a groundout by freshman Drew Vos (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Alma later placed two runners aboard in the sixth but Spoelstra was able to get out of the jam with an inning-ending flyout. Spoelstra then stranded another baserunner in the seventh to gain the win.
Calvin had seven hits in the win led by Berger and Bosma with two hits apiece.
In game two, Groenewold (2-4) struck out four and walked only one while allowing five hits. Calvin jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the second and added one in the third, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to cruise to the win.
Calvin had 12 hits with five players recording multi-hit games led by sophomore Jake VanAlten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) who was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's.
