SOFTBALL
Calvin 5, Trine 4
Trine 14, Calvin 0

Calvin hit the double-digit plateau in victories in dramatic fashion on Saturday, upsetting regionally-ranked Trine 5-4 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior Mandy Johnson drove in the winning run with a one-out single to right that scored junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) from third base with the winning run.

Trine took an early 3-0 lead, scoring single runs in the first, second and fourth innings before Calvin came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run to centerfield by VanRooyen. In the fifth, Calvin freshman Kyleigh Fri (Allendale HS) led off with a home run down the left field line to cut the Trine lead to 3-2. Fri drove in another run on a single up the middle in the sixth to tie the game 3-3 but the visiting Thunder (19-9 overall, 9-5 MIAA) came back with a run in the top of the seventh on a homerun down the left field line by Tara Sipperly.

Trailing 4-3, Calvin mounted a seventh inning rally as sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) reached base on an error and move to second on the errant throw. VandenAkker then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored moments later on a second wild pitch to tie the game. VanRooyen followed with a single up the middle and moved to third on another Trine error, setting up Johnson's walk-off heroics.

Calvin reaped the benefits of seven Trine errors in the win as three of Calvin's five runs were unearned. Meanwhile, Calvin freshman Shelby Mast (Hudsonville HS) had a superb outing, striking out a (collegiate) career-high 12 batters while scattering eight hits.

In game two, Trine bounced back for a 14-0 victory behind a 14-hit attack. The Thunder scored two runs in the second, four in the third and eight in the fourth to put the game away. Calvin (10-19 overall, 5-7 MIAA) had just one hit, a single off the bat of sophomore Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS).

Calvin returns to action next Tuesday, hosting Goshen in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.

In game one, Calvin built a 4-0 lead with three runs in the first and one in the second. Freshman Tyler Tos (Walnut Creek, CA) had a two-run RBI single in the first. Olivet (6-23, overall 4-16 MIAA) came back with two runs in the top of the third but the Knights answered with a run in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly to center by Tos that plated freshman Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian HS) who had reached on a one-out double.

Olivet scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game 5-5 but Tos broke the tie with an RBI bunt single in the bottom of the fifth and sophomore Jake VanAlten (Holland Christian HS) drove in a second run with a bases-loaded walk.

In the seventh, Olivet placed runners on second and third with one out but senior Rob Kool (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was able to come on in relief to get the Knights out of the jam with back-to-back ground balls that did not advance either runner. Kool picked up the save with his seventh inning performance while sophomore Joe Lambers (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) picked up the win in relief to up his record to 1-1 on the year.

Calvin had 10 hits in the game one win including two from Tos who drove in a career-high four runs.

In game two, Calvin grabbed a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second. In the second, Tos doubled and scored on a single by VanAlten. Calvin junior pitcher Keith Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ) kept Olivet hitless through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth as Olivet senior Erik McCloud belted a two-run homer to left and the Comets followed with two more unearned runs to take a 4-2 lead. In the sixth, the Comets put the game away with three unearned runs.

Calvin outhit Olivet 9-4 in the loss but stranded seven baserunners. Calvin also committed four errors which led to seven unearned runs. Spoelstra took the loss to fall to 4-3 on the year. Cok and senior Kyle Gurzynski (Ludington HS) had two hits apiece for the Knights in the loss.

CALVIN 5K SPRING CLASSIC 5K RECAP
(Written by Calvin Alumni Relations Director Michael J. VanDenend)

The 2010 edition of the Calvin Spring Classic 5k and Karen Muyskens Fun Run drew an unofficial record field of over 1,100 participants and resulted in Jana Baatenburg of Grand Rapids taking the title as women's overall champion and Zack Nowicki of Comstock Park talking the men's overall crown.

Although rain was in forecast and a light shower fell prior to the race, this year's Classic runners faced cool and dry conditions.

Baatenburg took first place among women with a time of 18:55, while Nowicki ran the 3.1-mile course in 17:30.

Tricia Nelson of Alto was the overall female masters champion with a time of 23:27 (the 15th female to finish) and Jay Bowers of Caledonia took home the male masters crown after a 18:27 finish (the seventh male to finish).

The annual Calvin Spring Classic is a TAC-certified run entirely on Calvin College campus roads, starting and ending near the Prince Conference Center and taking runners under the East Beltline, through campus roadways to East Paris Avenue and back. Classic Race Management handled the timing; see www.classicrace.com for full results.
