MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 86, Kalamazoo 59
(written by sports information student assistant Derek Neice)
Calvin’s trademark this season has been its clutch shooting from everywhere on
the floor. From beyond the three-point line, in the paint and from the charity
stripe, the Knights have consistently been a quality shooting team. Saturday
afternoon exemplified just that as Calvin defeated Kalamazoo by a score of
86-59.
“It turned out to be a fun game,” Calvin coach Kevin Vande Streek said with a
smile afterwards. “I thought the first half we defended well but did a poor
job on the board.”
The Knights shot 45.2 percent from the floor over the course of the game and
shot 81.5 percent from the free throw line, again proving why they are the best
free throw shooting team in the MIAA and one of the best all-around shooting
teams in the conference.
6’0” freshman Bryan Powell hit on 7 of 8 from the field and led the Knights
with a career-high 18 points and five steals, including an impressive dunk
after stealing the ball. Senior Matt Veltema notched three more triples to his
basketball resume as he finished with 15 points.
“He’s [Powell] really good in the open floor and good at beating his man and
making plays for his teammates,” said Vande Streek of Powell’s game. “I’ve
always been impressed with how unselfish he is, and he was able to get to the
rim all the way a few times, even throwing in a dunk for good measure at the
end, so it was fun for him.”
“Matt [Veltema] is just a great Christian young man,” said Vande Streek of his
senior guard. “He’s one of the best we’ve had here and I’m really happy for
the career that he’s had, he’s been a really big part of what we’ve done for
four years.”
“He’s become a great leader, and it’ll be a sad day when Matt plays his last
game for us, that’s for sure,” Vande Streek concluded.
Senior John Mantel scored nine physical points and grabbed seven boards in the
game, and Brent Schuster notched another nine points before fouling out in the
second half. Paul Campbell also came off the bench with eight points of his
own.
The first half opened with a quick Kalamazoo score, the Hornets’ only lead of
the game, before Calvin scored 11 straight to command the lead, a lead they
built upon with their good shooting for the remainder of the game.
After outscoring Kalamazoo 43-30 in the first half, the Knights put on a
nearly identical second frame as they outscored the Hornets 43-29, a totally
dominant performance around the board for Calvin. Another stat that is
definitely worth mentioning is scoring off the bench, as Calvin’s bench scored
half of the Knights’ points in the game and outscored the Hornet bench 43-18.
The win pushes Calvin to a 15-8 overall record with a 10-2 conference record,
keeping the Knights tied for first. Calvin’s remaining schedule includes a
game on the road at Albion on Wednesday and a home contest against Alma next
Saturday.
“We always talk about being the hardest working team every time we step on the
floor,” Vande Streek said about the remaining schedule. “I’ve been saying that
I don’t want to talk anymore about standings or goals or championships because
if we work as hard as we possibly can that stuff will take care of itself.”
“I think for the most part we’ve done that,” Vande Streek continued.
“Wednesday at Albion will be really tough, a physical battle. They have a
nice team and we certainly need to be ready to go and give our best effort.”
The game Wednesday is set to commence at 7:30 p.m.
