Track and Field Teams Post Strong Performances at Laker Lints Invitational;
Women's Swimming and Diving Leads U. of Chicago Invitational - Men in Fourth Place
 
TRACK AND FIELD
 
ALLENDALE -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams opened their indoor campaigns on Friday night at the Mike Lints Alumni Invitational hosted by Grand Valley State University.
 
On the men's side, Calvin's distance contingent posted several sterling efforts led by sophomre Nick Kramer who won the 5,000 meter run with an NCAA III (indoor) provisional qualifying time of 14:51.21. Kramer was one of five Calvin runners in the top seven with sophomore Matt Vander Roest second (15:11.6), senior Aaron Goodman fourth (15:21.6), senior Tim Langenberg sixth (15:24.0) and sophomore Dan Kerr seventh (15:24.40).
 
In the men's mile run, senior Jed Christiansen just missed an NCAA III provisional qualifying performance, finishing second with a time of 4:16.53. In the 3,000 meters, senior George Visser was second with a time of 8:56.75.
 
Other notable performances include senior Kelby McClelland finishing fourth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.50) and junior Karl Farlk taking eighth in the weight throw (45-10.75).
 
On the women's side, junior Rachel Boerner led the way with a third place time of 57.50 in the 400 meters. Senior Katie Roelofs was also seventh in the race (59.90). In the distance events, senior Liz Smit was sixth in the 3,000 meters (10:17.16) while senior Jessica Koster won the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:50.60.
 
Both teams return to action next Friday when it competes at the Eubanks Open hosted by Grand Valley State.
 
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
 
CHICAGO, IL -- After one day of competition, the Calvin women's swimming and diving team holds a 13-point lead over host Chicago in the two-day University of Chicago Invitational. Ranked 14th in the latest Collegeswimming.com Division III Top 25 poll, Calvin has a first place total of 380 points while 13th-ranked Chicago sits in second place with 367 points.
 
On the men's side, Calvin sits in fourth place in a field of eight teams with 176 points. Host Chicago leads the field with 382.5 points.
 
In the women's competition, seniors Emily Roberts and Maggie Vail led the way in the 200 IM with Roberts placing second with a season-best time of 2:13.64 while Vail was close behind in 2:13.91. Freshman Rachel Colasurdo also cracked the top six, placing fifth with a time of 2:15.09.
 
In the 50 freestyle, junior Monica Bressler led a 1-4 Calvin finish with a first place time of 25.26 while freshman Rachel Bos was fourth in 26.04.
 
In the three-meter diving competition, Calvin went 2-3-4 led by senior Casey Herman who was second (418.10) and followed by freshman Sam Klaasen in third (395.85) and junior Carmen Brummel in fourth (382.25).
 
In the 500 freestyle, Calvin had three swimmers in the top six led by freshman Stephanie Fox in third (5:14.83), senior Laura Price in fourth (5:20.09) and freshman Shelby Cloyd in sixth (5:21.58).
 
Calvin also scored big points in the relays with its 200 freestyle relay team of Bressler, Fox, Kristen Kinzer and Vail winning in a time of 1:40.20 while its 400 medley relay team of Kristen Kinzer, Roberts, Caitlin Alexander and Fox took second in a time of 4:08.18.
 
On the men's side, sophomore Ross Battoclette took third in the 500 freestyle (4:56.26) while freshman Stephan Kraft was ninth in the 200 IM (2:03.40) and sophomore Ethan Tatum ninth in the 50 freestyle (22.55).
 
In the relays, Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of sophomore Trent Stensrud and freshmen Devin Heitz, Ryan Martinie and Zach Reuther was seventh (1:33.04) while its 400 medley relay team of senior Kurt VanAllsburg, Kraft, senior Jon Herrema and Tatum was sixth in a time of 3:43.14.
