Calvin Lands Five on All-Central Region Men's Soccer Teams
MEN'S SOCCER
A record five members of the Calvin men's soccer team have received Division III All-Central Regional honors as named by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Named to the All-Central Region first team from Calvin are seniors Greg Snapper, Luke Holtrop and Alex McKenzie and junior Dan Kmetz. In addition, junior Scott Hooker has been named to the All-Central Region second team.
As members of the first team, Snapper, Holtrop, McKenzie and Kmetz are now eligible for NSCAA Division III All-America consideration.
A native of Madison, Wisconsin, Snapper anchored a Calvin defense that posted 14 shutouts this fall and recorded a season goals-against-average of 0.67. A three-time first team All-MIAA selection as a sweeperback, Snapper was named to the all-tournament team last weekend at the NCAA III Final Four held in San Antonio, Texas. A graduate of Madison West High School, Snapper is receiving All-Central region honors for the second straight year as he was named to the Great Lakes All-Region second team in 2008. This fall, Snapper was a two-time MIAA Defensive Player of the Week and was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player for the second straigh year.
A midfielder, Holtrop hails from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School. Holtrop is receiving all-region accolades for the first time. A two-time first team All-MIAA selection, Holtrop scored two goals and collected three assists this fall for a total of seven points. Both of his goals proved to be game-winners including a memorable goal in the closing minutes of a 1-0 victory at Olivet in early October. Holtrop was also named to the all-tournament team at the NCAA III Final Four last weekend.
McKenzie is from Lindenhurst, Illinois. He is a graduate of Antioch High School. A forward, McKenzie is receiving all-region honors for the first time. McKenzie led Calvin in scoring this season with nine goals, five assists and 23 points. Three of his nine goals proved to be game-winners including a memorable late second half goal in a first round NCAA III Tournament victory at Wheaton (IL) last month. McKenzie was named to the All-MIAA first team this fall and received MIAA Offensive Player of the Week honors once.
A midfielder, Kmetz is from Strongsville, Ohio. He is a graduate of Strongsville High School. A first team All-MIAA selection this fall, Kmetz was credited with four goals, five assists and 13 points this fall. Three of his four goals were game-winners including a score in a 2-1 regular season win over Wheaton (IL) and a score in the closing minutes of a 3-2 win at Trine that kept Calvin's MIAA title hopes alive during the final week of the regular season. At the NCAA III Final Four this past weekend, Kmetz was named to the all-tournament team.
Hooker is from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Unity Christian High School. A forward, Hooker is receiving all-region honors for the second consecutive year as he was named to the Great Lakes All-Region third team last fall. Hooker had five goals, four assists and 14 points during the 2009 season. He was also named to the All-MIAA second team.
This fall, Calvin became the first team in school or MIAA history to reach the national championship game in soccer, bowing to defending national champion Messiah (PA) in the title game last Saturday night. The loss concluded a thrilling run through the NCAA III Tournament for the Knights who advanced past teams from Wheaton, Wartburg, Carnegie Mellon, Transylvania and Dominican to reach the championship final. Calvin finished the year with an 18-5-3 overall record and captured its third consecutive MIAA title, finishing 10-3-1 in league play.
