CALVIN SPRING CLASSIC 5K RUN/WALK RECAP
(written by Calvin Alumni Relations Director Mike Van Denend)
The 2009 edition of the Calvin Spring Classic 5k Run/Walk drew an unofficial record field of about 1,100 participants and resulted in Samantha Westveer of Grand Rapids taking the title as women's overall champion and Brian Paff of Grand Rapids talking the men's overall crown.
This year, the Spring Classic was held on a very warm and windy morning with temperatures in the '70s. There was also a new course which has runner start just east of Calvin's new Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex and end just west of the building.
Scores of children participated in the Karen Muyskens Family Fun Run indoors in the new Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. This event is dedicated to the late Calvin professor of chemistry Karen Muyskens. Karen's husband, Mark, also a professor of chemistry at the college, and their children were on hand to assist.
Westveer took first place among women with a time of 19:12, while Paff, a former Calvin cross country All-American, ran the 3.1-mile course in 16:17.
Diane Deboer-Bunn of Grand Rapids was the overall female masters champion with a time of 19:48 (the second female to finish) and Michael Nelson of Alto took home the male masters crown after a 18:49 finish (the eleventh male to finish).
Byron Center Christian won the School Challenge with 192 participants from the school community. Visbeen Associates took home the Corporate Challenge title.
The annual Calvin Spring Classic is a TAC-certified run entirely on Calvin College campus roads, starting and ending near the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex and taking runners under the East Beltline, through campus roadways to East Paris Avenue and back. Classic Race Management handled the timing; see www.classicrace.com for full results.
