CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 24, 2009 (PART TWO)

Tennis Teams Fall to UW-Whitewater;
Baseball Splits With Williams;
Softball Drops Two in Tucson

MEN'S TENNIS
Wisconsin-Whitewater 7, Calvin 2

ORLANDO, FL -- In a meeting of regionally-ranked teams, Wisconsin-Whitewater proved up to the task, handing Calvin (4-1) its first loss of the season, defeating the Knights 7-2. Calvin picked up singles victories from senior Steve DeMaagd (Calvin Christian HS) and sophomore Andrew DeVlieger (Northpointe Christian HS) at No. 2 and No. 4 singles respectively.

Whitewater swept all three doubles flights however to gain the early momentum. Whitewater came in ranked ninth in the most recent ITA Division III Central Region rankings while Calvin is ranked 11th in the region. Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it faces Hamline at noon.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

ORLANDO, FL -- Calvin slipped to 4-4 with a 6-3 loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater Tuesday afternoon. Whitewater came in ranked seventh in the ITA Division III Central Region rankings while Calvin was ranked 15th in the region. Whitewater grabbed an early 2-1 lead with victories at No. 1 and No.2 doubles. Calvin's No. 3 doubles tandem of juniors Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) and Rachel DeGroot (Lombard, IL) did pick up an 8-6 win however. Calvin then took the top two singles flights with sophomore Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning at No. 1 singles and sophomore Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS) wining at No. 2 singles. Whitewater took the final four singles points however to clinch the win.

Calvin is back in action on Thursday when it faces regionally-ranked Luther at 10:30 a.m.

PHOENIX, AZ -- The Calvin baseball team is 3-3 on its spring trip to Arizona and 3-5 overall after splitting a doubleheader with Williams of Massachusetts Tuesday afternoon. Calvin won the opener 10-4 in eight innings and then dropped game two 12-3.

SOFTBALL
Buena Vista 6, Calvin 2
Otterbein 10, Calvin 0

TUCSON, AZ -- The Calvin softball team remained winless on the season, falling 6-2 to Buena Vista and 10-0 to Otterbein on Tuesday morning. In the loss to Buena Vista, Calvin carried a 2-1 lead on the strength of a two-run RBI double by freshman Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Buena Vist countered with five runs in the sixth however to take the lead and then held Calvin scoreless in the sixth and seventh. Calvin had three hits including two from freshman Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS).

Senior Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took the loss for Calvin, striking out six and walking five.

In the loss to Otterbein, the Cardinals picked up the win in a game limited to five innings because of the mercy rule.

Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it faces St. Catherine (MN) and Buena Vista.
