WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 6, Carthage 3
KENOSHA -- One year after falling to Carthage College 9-0, Calvin turned the tables with a 6-3 win over the host Lady Reds Saturday evening. Carthage entered the match ranked 10th in the Central Region rankings while Calvin entered the match unranked. Featuring a lineup of only freshmen and sophomores, Calvin pulled the upset win.
Carthage took two of the three doubles points but Calvin won five of the six singles points to claim the win. Picking up singles victories for Calvin were freshman Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 1 singles, freshman Kaitlyn Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS) at No. 2 singles, sophomore Elizabeth Geenan (Holland Christian HS) at No. 3 singles, sophomore Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) at No. 4 singles and sophomore Jill VanVeen (Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 6 singles.
Calvin's doubles point came at No. 3 doubles with Geenen and sophomore Rachel DeGroot (Lombard, IL) teaming up for the win.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it travels to Division II Ferris State University for a 1:00 p.m. match.

MEN'S TENNIS
UW-Whitewater 5, Calvin 4
KALAMAZOO -- In a matchup of regionally-ranked teams, Calvin came up just short, falling to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Saturday evening in a match played at Kalamazoo College. Calvin entered the match ranked fourth in the Central Region rankings and 21st nationally while Wisconsin-Whitewater entered the match ranked seventh in the Central Region rankings. Saturday's match featured the season opener for the Knights while Wisconsin-Whitewater improved to 5-3 with the win.
Wisconsin-Whitewater took two of the three doubles points and then clinched the win by winning singles points at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Calvin's singles points came from senior Ricky Tilton (Gap, PA) at No. 1 singles, junior Marcus Zeilstra (Oak Brook, IL) at No. 2 singles and freshman Andrew DeVlieger (Northpointe Christian HS) at No. 6 singles.
Calvin's lone doubles point from came Andrew De Vlieger and junior Andrew Rescorla (Zionsville, IN) at No. 3 doubles. Calvin will now break until March 10 when it faces Colby Sawyer College in Orlando, Florida.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Seven members of the Calvin women's swimming and diving team have received All-MIAA honors while one member of the Calvin men's team has been named to the All-MIAA men's team.
Named to the All-MIAA women's team from Calvin are seniors Stephanie Duncan, Sarah Abbott, Lis Beal, junior Erica Deur and Cara VanWoerkom and sophomores Emily Roberts and Maggie Vail. Named to the All-MIAA men's team from Calvin is senior John Boumgarden.
A native of Long Grove, Illinois, Duncan is making her fourth straight appearance on the All-MIAA team. A graduate of Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Duncan is the eighth individual in Calvin women's swimming and diving history to receive All-MIAA four straight years. At the recent MIAA Championships, Duncan took first place in the 200 freestyle and was fourth in the 100 freestyle and sixth in the 500 freestyle.
A native of East Grand Rapids and a graduate of East Grand Rapids High School, Abbott is making her first appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Championships, Abbott was third in the 400 IM, third in the 100 breaststroke and second in the 200 breaststroke.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapis Christian High School, Beal is also making her first appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Championships, Beal took third on the one meter diving board and fourth on the three-meter diving board.
A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Deur is making her third straight appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Championships, Deur was named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Diver for the third straight year after winning MIAA titles on both the one and three-meter diving boards.
VanWoerkom is from Wyoming and is a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian High School. She is making her first appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA championships, VanWoerkom captured an MIAA title in the 50 freestyle and took second in the 100 and 200 freestyle.
Roberts is from DeKalb, Illinois. She is a graduate of DeKalb High School. At the MIAA Championships, Roberts captured MIAA titles in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke while taking third in the 200 breaststroke. She is making her second straight appearance on the All-MIAA team.
Vail is from Portage and is a graduate of Portage Northern High School. She is making her first appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Championships, Vail captured an MIAA title in the 200 breaststroke and took second in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.
On the men's side, Boumgarden is making his third appearance on the All-MIAA team. A native of Naperville, Illinois, and a graduate of Naperville North High School, Boumgarden took second in the 100 butterfly at the MIAA Championships. He also placed third in the 100 freestyle and fourth in the 50 freestyle.
Under the direction of head coach Dan Gelderloos, the Calvin women's team captured its fourth consecutive MIAA title while the men's team took fourth.
ICE HOCKEY
MIDLAND -- The men's club ice hockey team finished in fourth place at the MCHC Tournament over the weekend. Calvin opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over Oakland University Thurday night but then fell to Northwood 6-4 on Friday and to Saginaw Valley State 5-2 on Saturday.
In the loss to Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Calvin received a pair of goals from Clay Verkaik and a pair of assists from Steve Krommendyk. Calvin is now 16-13 on the year and returns to action on Saturday when it faces Northwood on March 1.
On March 12, Calvin will begin play at the ACHA Division III National Tournament in Rochester, Minnesota. The national tournament web site can be found on-line at: http://www.rochsports.org/hockey/index.html
