MEN’S BASKETBALL

(written by Drew DeVries ’08)

ALMA - Calvin used a pair of runs early in the first half of Saturday
afternoon's game at Alma to build a comfortable halftime lead that it would
never look back on. The Knights opened the game with an 8-0 run and then put
together a 9-0 run and eventually defeated the Scots 76-56. It was Calvin's
18th consecutive win against Alma.

Calvin used its offensive power to begin putting away the Scots early behind
eleven first half points by Derek Griffin (Whitehall/Whitehall). The Knights
led 44-29 heading into the locker room and at the end of the game, Calvin head
coach Kevin Vande Streek was happy with the way his team played with focus.

"One of the things we have been working on since Christmas break has been our
mental approach," said Vande Streek. "We've been working on getting locked in
mentally and focusing which was something I saw today. We did, however, give up
too many offensive rebounds and had a few too many turnovers, but other than
that, I thought we played really well." Vande Streek was referring to the
twelve offensive rebounds Calvin gave up to Alma in the first half.

Calvin continued to build upon its lead and led by as many as 24 in the second
half but did get a small scare from Alma. The Scots went on a 13-2 run and
pulled within fourteen points, 62-48, with over seven minutes to go. But Dustin
Smith (Hamilton/Hamilton) knocked down a couple big shots and once again,
Calvin found itself in control of the ballgame. Smith finished with 13 for the
game and provided Calvin with a lot of energy.

"Smith brings a lot intensity and gives us a spark with his quickness," said
Vande Streek. "He's in a groove right now and is gaining a lot of confidence
with takes some pressure off the other guys."

Another player who has been contributing well who gave the Knights a lift today
was Tim Katt (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield East). "Tim did a really nice job
today," said Vande Streek. "Tim gives us energy whether he starts or comes off
the bench. He gave our team a big lift today." Katt finished the game with
seven points.

Leading the Knights in scoring today was Griffin who finished with sixteen.
Junior center John Mantel (Chelsea HS) also had a strong effort with seven
points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Junior Caleb Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD)
added eight points and a game-high six assists while commiting just one
turnover in 25 minutes of action. The Knights shot 53.4 percent from the floor
(28 of 52) and 50 percent (7 of 14) from three-point range. Calvin also had 20
assists against just seven turnovers. Alma (0-11 overall, 0-2 MIAA) shot just
30.2 percent overall.

Calvin (7-5 overall, 2-0 MIAA) will travel to Adrian on Wednesday night for an
8:00 pm tip-off.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Adrian 61, Calvin 54

ADRIAN – A dry spell over the final eight minutes of play spelled defeat for
the Calvin women’s basketball team as the Knights were upended in Adrian
Saturday afternoon 61-54. Calvin took a 2-1 lead on a jumper by junior Kelly
Trewhella in the opening minutes of the game and held the lead over the next 33
minutes of play.

Adrian (5-8 overall, 3-2 MIAA) however closed out the game with a flourish
while Calvin did not as the Bulldogs outscored the Knights 23-8 over the final
eight minutes of play. Leading 46-38 with 8:09 left on the clock, Calvin went
without a field goal for nearly four minutes while Adrian ripped off seven
unanswered points to close to within one at 46-45.

Moments later, Adrian took its first lead of the second half on a three-pointer
by Jennifer Perrin that Adrian would never trail again, stretching its lead seven points at 57-48 and
then connected on four free throws in the final minute of play to seal the win.

Calvin’s loss was its third straight and its first to Adrian since the 2002-03
season.

Calvin twice squandered double-digit leads as the Knights built a 25-14
advantage only to see the Bulldogs reel off a 10-3 run to end the first half to
close to within four at 28-24. Calvin (7-6 overall, 3-3 MIAA) then built a
41-30 lead on a jumper by junior Kristi Brummel (South Christian HS) with 11:55
remaining but could not hold the lead.

Calvin was led in defeat by junior Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids Christian HS)
who notched her fourth career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds
while senior Nikki Zimmerman (Traverse City West HS) had 10 points.

Calvin shot just 30.8 percent from the floor including just 21.4 percent in the
second half when the Bulldogs outscored the Knights 37-26. Calvin also turned
the ball over 21 times and was outrebounded by Adrian 41-32.
Adrian was led in scoring by Perrin with 14 points while Liz Hafeli had 11
points and JaLisha Belle 10 points.
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts Olivet at 7:30 p.m. at
the Calvin Fieldhouse.
