Women's Basketball Remains Unbeaten With Win at Concordia

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 59, Concordia 52

ANN ARBOR -- A come-from-behind effort in the second half lifted Calvin to a 59-52 victory at Concordia University Tuesday evening, allowing the Knights (3-0) to remain unbeaten on the young season.

Tuesday's game was a tale of two halves as Calvin trailed 28-17 at halftime before shooting 55.0 percent in the final 20 minutes, en route to a 42-point second half scoring output.

"We did not come out in the first half with much energy and Concordia did," said fifth-year Calvin head coach John Ross who recently posted his 100th collegiate coaching victory and is now 102-17 (.857) at the helm of the Knights. "We really turned things around in the second half and it was a team effort that made it happen."

The catalyst for the second half Calvin surge was senior Nikki Zimmerman (Traverse City West HS) who finished with a game-high 18 points and five assists. "Nikki was really big for us at the start of the second half," said Ross. "She set the tone for our comeback."

Zimmerman was one of three Calvin players to notch double-digits in scoring as junior Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 13 points and nine rebounds while junior Kristi Brummel (South Christian HS) had 10 points and a pair of clutch three-pointers in the second half. "Kristi hit a couple of huge triples when we needed them," said Ross. "Her shots gave us some breathing room."

Junior Kelly Trewhella (Rockford HS) also had eight points including a pair three-point shots. Junior Sarah Partridge (East Lansing HS) also had five points and nine rebounds while junior post Lauren Roodvoets (South Christian HS) had four rebounds and five blocked shots. "Sarah gave us a big lift on the boards and Lauren helped change the game with her defense in the second half," said Ross. "Again, this was a team effort."

Concordia (1-3) was led in scoring by Jennifer O'Neil with 11 points and seven rebounds while Erika Grzbowski had 10 points. "Concordia gave us everything they had to give," said Ross. "I give them credit. They pushed us to the limit and gave us their best shot."

Calvin returns to action on November 27 when it travels to Kalamazoo for its MIAA opener, scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
