MEN’S SOCCER
Calvin 2, Tri-State 0
(written by Bruce VanBaren ’09)
Calvin topped Tri-State 2-0 to move into sole possession of first place in the
MIAA after co-leader Kalamazoo College fell at Hope College 1-0 in overtime.
The Knights are now 6-1-0 and will be riding a six game winning streak into
Saturday's matchup with Kalamazoo, a game behind Calvin in the league
standings.
Kalamazoo fell at Hope 1-0 in overtime on Wednesday, leaving Kalamazoo and Hope
at 5-2-0 in league play, three points behind Calvin.
Calvin used second half goals from sophomore Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) and junior A.J. Dufendach (Forest Hills Northern HS) to gain the
win.
In the 51st minute, Holwerda scored his team high fourth goal of the year to
put the Knights on top 1-0.
"Scott Hooker (Hudsonville/ Unity Christian) had the ball and I saw I was wide
open," Holwerda described the play. "He played me a nice through ball right in
front of me. I saw their sweeper stepping pretty hard so knew it was to my
advantage. I just kind of poked it around him. The keeper and the defender
were coming, I didn't know if I was going to get there or not and I just kind
of slid and a did a little toe poke for the goal."
"[Holwerda] has really stepped it up over the last couple games," said Hughes.
"His speed and decision making is becoming quicker and he's starting to really
help our offense build."
The goal came just into the second half after the Knights played a lackluster
first half.
"[Tri-state was] attempting to force us into the middle of the field so we had
to recognize that in the second half and start to build our play in the second
half," said Coach Chris Hughes. "A lot of the guys got more involved on the
outside and it worked. That's where we built our play and that's how the goals
came."
One of those players was Hooker who fed Holwerda's goal and assisted the second
goal of the game.
In the 73rd minute Hooker took the ball along the endline from the corner. His
shot deflected off of the keeper and right to the foot of junior midfielder
A.J. Dufendach (Grand Rapids/ Forest Hills Northern), who was left alone at the
goal mouth to score his second goal of the season.
"When [Dufendach is] on, our team is on, and when he's consistent our team is
consistent," Hughes said. "He had a real strong second half in his decision
making and also in the releasing of the ball. The whole midfield in the second
half did a much better job of releasing the ball quicker which forced Tri-State
to run."
And that also took any Tri-State pressure off of the defense which was again
outstanding. The Thunder managed only seven shots to Calvin's fifteen. The
Knight defense has now allowed only one conference goal in seven MIAA games.
"We're taking risk with having young guys in the back but our young guys are
fearless," said Hughes. "It's not always pretty but they are getting the job
done. I'm proud of what they're doing, [sweeper] Greg Snapper (Madison, WI/
Madison West) is playing like and absolute warrior back there. [Stopper] Luke
Holtrop (Hudsonville/ Unity Christian) is doing some very good things for the
team."
But the key to the defense has been junior goal keeper Darrin Cline. He is
ranked 15th in the nation with a goals against average of 0.440. Today, he
recorded his fifth shutout since taking over in goal, recording three saves.
"I'm proud of what Cline is doing," said Hughes. "He's performing, he's
getting the job done, he deserves to be in there."
The lone conference goal that Cline has allowed came against Kalamazoo, the
Knights only MIAA loss. Calvin hosts the Hornets at 2 p.m. on Saturday with
first place in the league on the line.
"Last time [we played them], we didn't have a good first half," said Hughes.
"We need to come out strongerearlier in the game, and I would like it to be when the opening whistle blows.
We need two 45 minute halves, not one."
