GRAND RAPIDS -- Calvin split a doubleheader with visiting Kalamazoo on Monday,
winning 9-0 in the opener and losing 4-1 in game two. The Knights are now 8-15
overall including 8-8 in the MIAA which currently places the Knights in a tie
for fourth place in the conference standings with Albion.

In the opener, Calvin rode the strong right arm of sophomore Todd LaForest
(Clio) who tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout victory. LaForest (3-1)
struck out four batters and walked none.

Calvin gave LaForest all the run support he would need with three runs in the
bottom of the first inning and added three more in the fifth and three more in
the sixth.

Calvin had only two hits in the first inning but used a walk, an error and a
hit batter to build a 3-0 lead. In the fifth, senior Nick Caudle (Calvin
Christian HS) reached base on a double and later scored on an error. Senior
Kyle Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN) followed with an RBI single and sophomore Chris
Blacklidge (Comstock Park HS) later drove in a run on a fielder's choice.

In the sixth, Calvin used a two-out rally to tack on three insurance runs.
Sophomore Jacob Vriesman (Denver, CO) reached base on a two-out error and
Caudle responded with his second double of the game, driving in Vriesman from
first. Back-to-back Kalamazoo errors then brought home two more Calvin runs.

Kalamazoo committed six errors in game one, leading to five unearned runs.

In game two, Kalamazoo (8-14 overall, 5-9 MIAA) turned the tables on the
Knights behind the stellar pitching effort from freshman Brandon Luczak (5-2).
Luczak struck out four and walked only two while scattering five Calvin hits.
Calvin freshman Rob Kool (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a strong pitching
performance in defeat, striking out four and walking only one but the Hornets
were able to score two runs in the second, one in the third and one in the
