ALBION -- Calvin snapped an eight-game losing skid and picked up a conference
victory in the process as the Knights gained a doubleheader split at Albion on
Saturday afternoon.
In game one, Calvin picked up a 4-2 victory and then fell 1-0 in game two.
Saturday's twinbill marked the conference opener for both teams.
In game one, Albion outhit Calvin 8-5 but the Knights used a two-out RBI single
by senior Kyle Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN) in the first, an RBI single by junior
Alex Marcus (Wilmar, MN) in the fifth and a passed ball by Albion in the
seventh to tack on an insurance run. Meanwhile, Calvin senior Andy Draayer
(Denver, CO) was able to strand eight Albion baserunners while scattering eight
hits to gain his first victory of the season.
In game two, Calvin sophomore Kyle Cousins (Holland Christian HS) and Albion
senior Ryan Gunderson hooked up in a pitcher's dual with the Britons scratching
across the only run of the game in the third on an RBI groundout. Calvin
mounted scoring threats in the fifth and seventh but could not tie or take the
lead. In the fifth, Calvin placed its first two runners on base on a hit batter
and a walk. Calvin then failed to successfully execute a sacrifice bunt and the
Knights were then retired on back-to-back groundouts. In the seventh, sophomore
Chris Blacklidge broke up a no-hit bid by Gunderson with a single up the
middle. He then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Fletcher and took third
when the Britons failed to cover the base defensively on the play. Calvin
sophomore Nate Pocock (Wayland, MA) followed with a sharp grounder into the
hole but Albion's Derek Tracy was able to make a diving grab of the ball, hold
Blacklidge at third and then gun the ball to first base for the out. Gunderson
then bore down to extinquish the threat with a game-ending strikeout.
Cousins (0-2) took the hard-luck loss despite allowing only three hits in six
innings of work.
The two teams will meet again on Monday in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at
2:00 p.m. A RealAudio broadcast of the twinbill will be available through the
Calvin web site at: http://www.calvin.edu/sports/ram/calvinsports.ram
