WHEATON, IL*In the second day of play in the CCIW/MIAA Classic hosted by Wheaton College, the Knights (4-1) took an 83-61 victory over opponent Carthage College (2-2). In addition to the win, Calvin’s leading scorer, senior Lisa Winkle (Grand Rapids/South Christian), moved into first place on Calvin’s all-time scoring and rebounding lists.

Winkle got her first points of the game in the early minutes of the first half, a lay-up giving Calvin a 4-2 lead. Freshman Allison Griswold (Webberville/Lansing Christian) sunk a three-pointer to extend the margin to six at 14-6. Another Winkle lay-up at the 10:08 mark saw the Knights with a commanding 22-11 lead.

However, besides a Winkle lay-up and one from sophomore Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian), only fouls and turnovers came from Calvin in the next five minutes, and Carthage was able to regain the lead at 28-26 off an impressive 17-4 scoring run.

Calvin regrouped as three three-pointers*two from Griswold and one from sophomore Kelly Trewhella (Rockford/Rockford)*and a jumper from freshman Brook VanEck (Lowell/Lowell) distanced Calvin by six at 31-37. Calvin came out of the first half barely ahead with a 39-35 lead.

The Knights did not make the same mistakes in the second half, which they started with an unchallenged 11-0 scoring run that included five points from Winkle, two from Harris, and four from junior Lindsey Peuler (Grandville/Grandville), both of which came off of steals. Calvin led 50-35 four minutes into the half.

Carthage managed only five points in the next seven and a half minutes, allowing Calvin to slip away with a 27-point lead when sophomore Kristi Brummel (Byron Center/South Christian) made a three-pointer.

Because of the large lead, a 12-4 run by Carthage still left the Knights ahead by 19 points with four minutes left on the clock. Two three-point shots from sophomore Sarah Partridge (East Lansing/East Lansing) help Calvin re-establish a 28-point margin at 80-52. Carthage went on a 9-3 run, but time ran out on any further effort, Calvin taking the game 83-61.

Winkle led all scoring with 21 points and 14 rebounds. With this evening’s stats, Winkle now tops Calvin’s all-time scoring list with 1,353 career points and also moved to number one on the all-time rebounding list with 768 career rebounds.

Brummel added 12 points, Harris was also in double-digits with 11 points, and Griswold and Peuler had 9 apiece. Partridge added six points and junior Rachael Willet (Rockford/Rockford) also had an impressive five blocks along with five points and five rebounds.

Carthage’s Shana Lieberman had 13 points, Katherine Burshiem had 11, and Lauren Johnston had 10 points.

Calvin hosts conference-opponent Kalamazoo on Wednesday, December 6 in a 7:30 p.m. game before taking a break for end-of-semester exams.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
(Written by Annalise Venhuizen ’08)

KENOSHA, WI*The men’s MIAA had a disappointing weekend in the two-day CCIW/MIAA Classic, Hope and Calvin having a combined 0-4 record against Wheaton and Carthage. A year ago, the result went the other way, Calvin and Hope having a 4-0 record against the CCIW. The Knights fell to 3-3 on the season as they suffered a defeat by Carthage (4-1) this evening, losing 54-74.

As they did last evening in their loss against Wheaton, the Knights allowed their opponent to take an early first half lead and was never able to make up the deficit. Carthage’s early lead came by way of a 9-0 scoring run to begin the game. Calvin had some nice shooting opportunities during those first four-and-a-half minutes but was unable to make any of them. Sophomore Micah Chappell (Wyoming/Wyoming Park) broke Calvin’s scoring drought with a three-pointer.

Calvin soon found itself down 20-5, however, as Carthage made some threes of its own. A 6-0 Calvin run made the score 22-11, Carthage leading. Carthage then increased the margin to 23 points at 36-13 with a 14-2 scoring run, broken only by two free-throws from senior Eric DeVries (Hudsonville/Unity Christian). Calvin found itself down by 21 points at the end of the half, Carthage holding a 46-25 lead.

In the second half, Calvin managed to keep the scoring even, even whittling away at Carthage’s lead. The Knights had a glimmer of hope in a 12-3 run, which was capped off by a jumper from sophomore Caleb Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD/Sioux Falls Christian) and a lay-up from freshman John Mantel (Chelsea/Chelsea), making the score 56-44 Carthage. From that point on, however, Carthage rebuilt its lead off of a high free-throw percentage. Time ran out on Calvin, who suffered its third straight loss in falling to Carthage 74-54.

Speaking again of Calvin’s inability to establish itself early in the game, Head Coach Kevin VandeStreek said, “We just can’t seem to get out of the blocks. In the first five minutes, I don’t think we could have seen better shooting opportunities, and we didn’t make any of them. I thought we played harder today, but we got down by fifteen right away and just couldn’t make it up. We had a hard time guarding their quickness.”

Veldhouse was Calvin’s leading scorer with 10 points, Mantel had eight points, and Griffin added seven. Calvin was 17-19 from the three-point line while Carthage was only 10-17, but Calvin had a low field goal percentage of 32.7% while Carthage was 57.8% from the floor.

Carthage had four players in double-digits with Brian Schlemm scoring 20 points, Milos Vukosavljevic with 14 points, Bill Shemerdiak with 13, and Trey Bowens with 11.

Calvin hosts Aquinas next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in a non-conference game. The teams met last weekend at the Select Bank Classic, Calvin coming away with an 81-65 win.
