GRAND RAPIDS * Calvin picked up its first doubleheader sweep of the season, handing visiting Cornerstone a pair of defeats Monday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex, winning by scores of 3-2 and 9-1.
In the opener, Calvin jumped on Cornerstone starter Leah Gruppen (18-9) for three runs in the bottom of the first and made the lead hold up as the Golden Eagles could only score single runs in the second and sixth innings. Calvin scored its three runs on the strength of three hits and two Cornerstone errors. Junior Erin Conrad (Calvin Christian HS) had a clutch two-run RBI double in the inning and later scored on an error to put the Knights up 3-0.
Cornerstone (18-14) threatened to tie or take the lead in the sixth inning but junior Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID) was able to come on in relief with two outs and snuff out a Cornerstone rally, as a harmless fly out to right left two runners on base with the score 3-2.
In the top of the seventh, Cornerstone's leadoff batter doubled to center but was stranded as Spooner got the next hitter to pop up and then struck out the final two batters to gain her second save of the season. Freshman Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS) picked up the win to run her season record to 8-5 on the year.
In game two, Spooner picked up a complete-game victory in a contest that was shortened to six innings because of the mercy rule. Calvin (10-14) scored one in the first and then built a 3-1 lead on a two-run RBI double by senior Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern HS). The Knights then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth with Cole singling in her third run of the game and freshman Loren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL) later following a bases-loaded double that hit the top of the left field wall and brought in three runs.
Cole went 3-for-3 in the game to raise her season batting average to .369 while Scarbrough also had two hits in the win. Spooner struck out seven and walked just one to raise her season record to 2-9.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Kalamazoo in a conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.

Grand Valley State 11, Calvin 4
GRAND RAPIDS - The 15th-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers (NCAA II) rolled into town on a sunny but cool afternoon and handed the Knights their sixth straight loss Monday afternoon at Calvin Field as the Knights were defeated 11-4.
Scott Larsen (Hastings/Hastings) for the Knights started at pitcher and hurled three solid innings giving up only two runs against a powerful Grand Valley offense that boasts eleven players with batting averages above .300. Kyle Snoeyink (Grandville/Calvin Christian), Nate Pocock (Wayland/Wayland, MA), and Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph/GR Community College) each made appearances on the mound with Snoeyink picking up the loss.
The Lakers scored first in the second while adding another one in the third to go up 2-0 early. The Knights had plenty of scoring opportunities but were unable to execute their offense while loading the bases a couple times and leaving nine total base runners on at by the end of the game.
Calvin was able to muster a run in the fifth when after loading the bases on a pair of hits and an error, Mike Stob (Caledonia/South Christian) scored on a throwing error. But Grand Valley kept pouring it on scoring three runs in back to back innings. In the bottom of the ninth, the Knights put a man on but then after a Willie Mays type catch in center field, Stoeffler was doubled out back at first and the Knights went down with a final score of 11-4.
Leading the Knights with a pair of hits was Mark Asma (Portage/Kalamazoo Christian) while Tyler Van Eps (Denver, CO/Denver Christian) and Chris Blacklidge (Comstock Park/Comstock Park) collected an RBI each. The Lakers gave Calvin trouble on the bases swiping five of them.
Winning pitcher for the Lakers was Nate Rizzi (3-3)
Calvin (11-17, 9-7 MIAA) will look to halt its losing streak on Friday when it continues league play with a doubleheader at Olivet which is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm.
