ALMA * Calvin completed a four-game series sweep of Alma College on Saturday, winning both ends of a doubleheader. Calvin nipped the host Scots 2-1 in game one and then broke loose for a 13-2 win in game two.
With a four-game win streak under their belts, the Knights (5-3 MIAA) are now in fourth place in the league standings, a game behind second place Albion (6-2) and Kalamazoo (6-2) and two games behind league-leading Adrian (7-1).
In Saturday's opener, Calvin senior Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) pitched a complete-game gem, outdueling Alma ace Brandon Teenier. Draayer (1-2) scattered seven hits and struck out six batters. Draayer's final strikeout closed out the game and left runners on first and third as Alma's Pat Ott reached base on a one-out single and then moved to third on a Calvin error with two outs. Draayer then bore down for a game-ending strikeout to pick up his first victory of the year while lowering his season earned run average to 1.99.
Alma took a 1-0 lead on a run in the bottom of the second but the Knights (7-11 overall) came back with two in the fourth as sophomore Alex Marcus (Willmar, MN) rapped an RBI single and senior Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood HS) followed with an RBI double. Marcus picked up two of Calvin's five hits in the win.
In game two, Calvin jumped on Alma starter Joe Thiry for five runs in the second and added another in the third to take a 6-0 lead. Alma answered with a pair of runs in the fourth but the Knights put the game out of reach with seven runs in the top of the seventh. Freshman Jacob Vriesman (Denver, CO) led the Calvin charge at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBI's. Seniors Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO), Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph) and Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park, IL) added two hits apiece. Junior Brad Brummel (South Christian HS) also delivered a clutch two-run RBI double in a pinch-hitting role in the seventh.
Freshman Kyle Cousins (Holland Christian HS) went the distance for the Maroon and Gold to post his first collegiate victory. Cousins (1-1) scattered seven Alma hits, struck out five batters and walked only two.
Calvin will now prepare to host a red-hot Kalamazoo College team on Wednesday in a doubleheader slated to start at 2:00 p.m. Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Steve Wideen, the Hornets are 13-4 overall and coming off a four-game sweep of Tri-State this week.
