GRAND RAPIDS - As the dust settled over Calvin's softball field at the Gainey Complex, the Knights walked off defeated after dropping a pair of nailbiters to the visiting Saints of Aquinas. Aquinas completed the sweep after winning game one 5-4 followed by a 2-0 game two victory.

In the opener, Calvin scored four quick runs in the bottom of the first after a few singles followed by an error. Then a single by sophomore Cori VanKoevering (Unity Christian HS) followed by a double by freshman Mallory Scholten (Grand Rapids Christian HS) wrapped up five hit, four run inning. But that was all the Knights were able to muster as their bats soon fell silent to the awakening of the Aquinas bats.

The Saints fought back scoring one in the second and fourth innings and then doing damage in the sixth as they took the lead after scoring three runs off four hits. Aquinas attacked again in the last inning scoring an insurance run but Calvin seemed poised for a comeback after scoring a run of their own and had two runners on with two outs. Their effort, however, fell short as Loren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL) struck out to end the game.

Leading the Knights in game one were Scholten with a pair of runs batted in and VanKoevering and Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern HS) who collected a pair of hits each. For Aquinas, McCall Kleinfelt led all Saints with three hits and a run batted in.

The second game proved to be a pitcher's duel. Junior Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID) for Calvin and Tarin Foster for Aquinas cruised through five scoreless innings until the Saints broke it open scoring two in the top of the sixth. A couple of sacrifice flies scored Casey Schweitzer and Foster to put Aquinas up for good.

The Knights made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh getting Scarbrough on second after a double followed by a single by VanKoevering putting Knights on second and third after VanKoevering reached second off of a bobbled ball by the catcher. But a groundout and a strike out ended the Knights bid for a comeback.

Spooner (1-4) picked up the loss in game two while Kristin Folkerts (4-3) took the hit for the first game.

The Knights were also limited to only three hits in the second game with VanKoevering picking up two and Scarbrough collecting one.

Calvin (5-7) will take the rest of the week off and return to action Monday as it will host Cornerstone at 3:30 p.m.
