Track and Field Teams Post Strong Performances at GR Open;
Men's Tennis Team Third at GR City Tournament;
All-MIAA Swimming & Diving Honors Announced
TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS COMPETE WELL AT GRAND RAPIDS OPEN
ALLENDALE * The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams came away with several strong performances at the Grand Rapids Indoor Open Invitational hosted by Grand Valley State Friday night.
Here are highlights of the men's competition:
*Junior Todd Schuster (Denver, CO) 3rd place in the one-mile run (4:20.10)
*Junior Harrison Jorritsma (Beamsville, ON) 2nd place in the 3,000 meter run (8:44.30)
*Sophomore Jon Gries (King of Prussia, PA) 3rd place in the 3,000 meter run (8:55.11)
*Freshman Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) 1st place in the 5,000 meter run (15:00.78)
*Sophomore Tad Hulst (Zeeland HS) 2nd place in the 5,000 meter run (15:09.26)
*Sophomore Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) 2nd place in the 55 meter hurdles (8.15)
*Senior Tim Zwiers (Pella, IA) 1st place in the triple jump (43-3)
*Senior Nate Meckes (Bay City, MI) 1st place in the shot put (55-2 ¾)
*Sophomore Ryan Jensen (Northview HS) 3rd place in the weight throw (51-11 ¾)
Here are highlights of the women's competition:
*Freshman Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) 4th place in the 400 meters (1:00.76) and 3rd place in the long jump (17-4)
*Freshman Anne Fennema (Brookfield, WI) 1st place in the one-mile run (5:22.90)
*Junior Nicki Reckman (Sarnia, ON) 3rd place in the one-mile run (5:26.40)
*Senior Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) 1st place in the 800 meter run (2:15.73)
*Junior Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE) 2nd place in the 3,000 meters (10:48.10)
*Freshman Calah Schlabach (St. Michael's, AZ) 3rd place in the 3,000 meters (10:49.70)
*Sophomore Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS) 3rd place in the 55 meter hurdles (8.52)
*Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of Medema, junior Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian HS), Bergsmstrom and Wittingen 2nd in the 4x400 meter relay (4:03.66)
*Katie Bolt, 2nd place in the high jump (5-3)
*Junior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) 2nd place in the triple jump (36-0 ½)
*Junior Megann VanderVliet (Ancaster, ON) 3rd placein the shot put (38-9 ½)
Both Calvin teams will now break until March 18 when they open their outdoor campaigns at the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis, Tennessee.
MEN'S TENNIS
The Calvin men's tennis team opened its season on Friday and Saturday at the Grand Rapids City Tournament held at the Riverview Racket Club. Calvin took third in a field of four teams with Aquinas taking first with 15 points, Grand Valley State second with 11 points, Calvin third with 10 points and Grand Rapids Community College fourth with no points.
Calvin placed individuals into the finals in four of the six singles flights but dropped all four finals matches with three of the four matches decided in super tiebreaker sets.
Calvin did claim a title at No. 3 doubles as the team of juniors Dan Volkema (Holland Christian HS) and Ryan Sneller (Sheboygan, WI) won a 2-6, 6-2, 10-5 (super tiebreaker) decision over a team from Grand Valley State.
Here are the results of Calvin players that reached Saturday's finals:

ALL-MIAA SWIMMING & DIVING TEAMS ANNOUNCED
A record nine members of the Calvin women's swimming and diving team have received All-MIAA honors. Named to the All-MIAA team are seniors Abby Johnson (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS) and Laura Miersma (Holland/Holland Christian HS), juniors Becky Weima (Caledonia/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Liz Ingebrigtsen (Bensenville, IL/Timothy Christian HS), Alex Wilson (Ellsworth, OH/Western Reserve HS) and Barbara Frazier (Placerville, CA/St. Francis HS), sophomores Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI/ Punahou HS) and Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL/Adlai A. Stevenson HS) and freshman Erica Deur (Holland/Holland Christian HS).
The group is the largest collection of Calvin individuals to receive All-MIAA honors in women's swimming and diving.
Johnson is receiving All-MIAA honors for the fourth straight year. She is the sixth individual in Calvin women's swimming and diving history to receive all-conference honors four straight years, joining Stephanie Rhind (1987-1990), Erin Kloostra (1999-2002), Katie Nagelkirk (2000-2003), Kristi VanWoerkom (1996-1999) and Liesl VandeCreek Pruis, Calvin (1984-1987) to have done so. Weima and Wilson are receiving All-MIAA honors for the third straight year while Vinson and Ducan are receiving the award for the second straight year. Ingebrigtsen, Deur, Miersma and Frazier are receiving All-MIAA accolades for the first time.
On the men's side, Calvin sophomore John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL/Naperville North HS) has been named to the All-MIAA team. It marks the first time that Boumgarden has been so honored.
