MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 76, Tri-State 63

GRAND RAPIDS * Calvin opened the second half of its 2006 MIAA schedule the same way it started its first half * with a win over Tri-State. In the first meeting, Calvin needed overtime to top the Thunder 85-79 but on Saturday, Calvin pulled away for a 76-63 triumph.

A 16-7 spurt late in the first half helped Calvin take a 44-32 halftime lead. Calvin's lead then ballooned to a 19-point margin at 57-38 six minutes into the second half before a Tri-State comeback effort whittled the lead down to seven points with 7:08 remaining. A three-pointer from the left wing by senior Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) quickly bumped Calvin's lead back up to double-digits at 64-54 with the Knights maintaining a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Freshman Dustin Smith (Hamilton HS) lit the spark for Calvin off the bench on Saturday, tossing in a career-high 18 points, connecting on all six of his field goal attempts including four three-point field goal attempts. Smith also connected on a pair of free throws to complete a perfect shooting afternoon. Smith was joined in double-digit scoring by Draayer who tossed in 15 points on the strength of five three-point field goals while freshman Caleb Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) had 13 points and senior Kyle Trewhella (Rockford HS) nine. Trewhella also had five assists and six rebounds while junior center Eric DeVries (Unity Christian HS) scraped down a game-high 10 rebounds.
